A big hello from Koh Lipe, Thailand!

Post Number:#1  Postby bexny » Fri Aug 10, 2012 8:04 pm

Hi everyone,

My name is Rebecca, nice to meet you all!

I just joined this forum in hopes of becoming a source of updated information about scuba diving on Koh Lipe. I've been working as an instructor on Koh Lipe for three years so it's safe to say that I love this place!

If you haven't heard of this place before, Koh Lipe is a small island on the west coast of Thailand, just over the border from Langkawi. It's an absolutely beautiful island and is surrounded by many uninhabited islands where most of the dive sites are.

With easy access from Malaysia, Koh Lipe perfect for a weekend dive trip. Note that although high season (dry season) is from November - April, the island is open all year round.

Looking forward to answering any questions you might have about Koh Lipe, diving or otherwise.

See you underwater!

Hey Rebecca, does the boat service from Pak Bara to Koh Lipe run all year (specifically this Saturday-Wednesday)?

Nvr been to koh lipe yet.. But i not sure you can gonto pak barra from lgkw. You need to go to Hat Yai and take a van to pak barra. Or you can drive directly to pak barra :)

tinaturner.....
actually the best time to visit koh lipe is from november to may where the sea calm & not choppy, same apply to krabi, phi-phi island and phuket, but u still can visit koh lipe from june to october but the sea will be rough and this time is the monsoon season (raining season), divers from krabi, phi-phi island & phuket will go to koh tao for diving......fariz sawal know better than me....
from november to may u can go to koh lipe through langkawi, telaga harbour speed boat (around 22 nautical miles) and thai custom & immigration have counter in bundhaya hotel koh lipe for passport stamping (only from nov to may, after that need to stamp passport at satun)
from june to october a lot of shops along walking street will be close & less option for foods/meals.
u can get to pak barra pier in langgu thailand from hatyai, 2 hours from hatyai.....
info on transport to koh lipe as below - from forradiving.com
"Koh Lipe can be reached from Pak Bara pier in Satun province, southwest Thailand and Langkawi, Malaysia. Pak Bara is around two hours drive from Trang or Hat Yai. You can get a minibus transfer to Pak Bara from in front of the train station in both cities. To catch the last ferry to Koh Lipe, the latest you should leave by is 11.30am. The ferry operates from 1st November to 15th May. Pak Bara pier is the most used departure point for Koh Lipe."

Hey everyone, thanks for the help! I've found out that another way is to fly to Hat Yai and travel 2 hours to Pak Bara, then a boat to Koh Lipe. Boat is only available at 11.30am to Koh Lipe and they have 9.30am boat back to mainland. There's only one airasia flight available to Hat Yai per day so you have to spend a night on the mainland and take the next day's boat and leave the island a day before your flight out.

I'm flying to Hat Yai tomorrow, unfortunately I have to skip Koh Lipe due to time constraint (read: bought the air tix without checking the boat timing/availability), boo..

I'll see you next time, Koh Lipe! Selamat hari raya to everyone celebrating!  ;)

Hey everyone,

Sorry was MIA for a few days, did not have internet access!

Anyway about the current boat situation from Pak Bara to Lipe. There is always at least one per day, leaving anywhere from 11:30 to 12:30 depending on when it fills up, as it is low season now and there are not so many people going to Lipe every day.

However, if there are more people than can fit on the first boat, or if enough people show up after the first boat leaves, a second boat will go to Lipe, around 3:30pm. Now I know this uncertainty kind of sucks but for those of you who are definitely going to Lipe anyway and were planning on spending a night in Hat Yai, you could always try to see if there's that afternoon boat. If not, then you're already in Pak Bara and can spend the night there. There are several choices for accommodation and quite a few restaurants. But bear in mind there's not much else to do in Pak Bara, it's a quiet village.

Hat Yai is actually a nice place to spend a night, with the Tune Hotel right in the city center, shopping and eating at the night markets, a few bars close by.

And what people have been saying about the monsoon season is right...while you can visit Lipe now, it is rainy season and even if it doesn't rain, it can be windy meaning choppy seas and a potentially rough boat ride out there. Not always the case though, as this can change day to day.

High season starts around middle of October and goes until middle of May. This is when the monsoon starts to move over to the east coast of Thailand and dry season kicks in on the west coast.

During low season, most businesses are closed on Lipe. The advantage is that you can get great deals on accommodation and you feel like you have the island all to yourself. But the downside would be fewer restaurant and bar choices.

tinaturner, hope to see you on your next trip to Lipe!

Another way to get from KL to Koh Lipe from June to mid-October:

1) Fly to Langkawi, (flight no. AK 5320) leaving at 0730 (KUL) arriving at 0830 (LGK).

2) Then you go directly to the pier and catch the ferry to Satun (Thailand) leaving at 09:30 arriving at 09:30 Thai time.

3) Then take a taxi up the coast to Pak Bara and catch the 11:30 speedboat to Koh Lipe.

You will be on the island before 13:30 for sure.

*Don't forget to book the evening flight for the return trip so you have plenty of time to get back to Langkawi. Any flight after 18:00 should be fine.

Hey zaff,

Langkawi to Satun appears to be Kuah Jetty from what I have seen on other websites but somehow cannot find it on the Langkawi Ferry Company's own website

http://www.langkawi-ferry.com/Home/Packages.aspx

The other ferries operated by this company use Kuah Jetty so I would imagine their Satun route also runs from there. Maybe best to call them to get confirmation.
