KUANTAN - A fun trip among a group of friends from Singapore turned tragic when one of them drowned near Kampung Juara at Pulau Tioman.

Police identified the victim as J. Ananthan, 32, a Malaysian holding PR status in Singapore.

He had arrived here with 10 friends, accompanied by two children, at noon on Thursday and went for a swim with a colleague, Mohd Nur Azmi Karim, 21, two hours later.

Ananthan was said to have got into difficulties about 45 minutes later.

Mohd Nur, who saw Ananthan in trouble, called his friends for help.

A staff at a turtle sanctuary nearby jumped in to try and save Ananthan but it was too late.

Rompin OCPD Deputy Supt Johari Jahaya said the body was sent to a polyclinic in Kampung Tekek.

"Efforts to airlift the body to the mainland on the same day was hampered by bad weather," he said when contacted here yesterday.

A police air unit deployed its Cessna Caravan CE208 aircraft from Sungai Besi to help fly the remains to Singapore.
