LUMUT, March 4 (Bernama) -- Fishermen operating over five nautical miles offshore will be compelled to install mobile tracking units (MTU), said Fisheries director-general Datuk Ahmad Sabki Mahmood.

The move was to prevent them from intruding into areas meant for traditional fishermen in trawlers using driftnets and fishtraps.

"Such intrusion is prevalent nationwide including Perak where 41 arrests were made last year.

"This not only cause conflict among fishermen but also excessive destruction of fish resources," he told reporters after a dialogue with fishermen at Fisheries Development Centre in Kampung Acheh, Sitiawan Friday.

Ahmad Sabki said the move has to be introduced to prevent destruction of fish breeding grounds.

The Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Ministry has compelled Zone B to install MTU to facilitate monitoring by fisheries enforcement agency.

However, the date of implementation has not been fixed as briefing on the matter is being held nationwide.
