World Oceans Day (WOD) is an annual event celebrated globally to commemorate the role of oceans in the balance of the earth's environment. On the 8th June of every year, since 1992, various events are held in public aquariums, zoos, museums, universities, schools, and businesses worldwide to celebrate WOD using different themes that reflect contemporary issues. The events are aimed at spreading public awareness of the link between the wellness of ocean to ours, and how daily human activities have implications affecting the health of the oceans.

This year however, the WOD will launch a different approach by adopting a two-year theme that will run for WOD 2011 and WOD 2012. The theme, Youth: the Next Wave for Change is focused on challenging participants, mainly the youth, to view ocean protection as a way of life. Youth have been chosen as the target group this year due to their ever-expanding capacity to accommodate and influence change in issues affecting the environment. As the most active users of social media they can become key players in spreading awareness across their extensive network and community of friends and family.

2011 will mark the second time that MIMA will participate in organising WOD celebrations. In 2010, MIMA together with the Department of Marine Park, Help Our Penyu (HOPE), Ocean Elements, Project AWARE, ReefCheck and Wetlands International organised an awareness campaign cum exhibition on the theme Oceans of Life. Plans for WOD 2011 are still underway and would include collaboration with the youth through various exciting events and activities. Through this year's WOD, MIMA hopes to contribute towards encouraging and inspiring youth in Malaysia to make a positive difference to the oceans' sustainability that will last through their generation and those to come.
