KUALA TERENGGANU, Monday 17 January 2011 (Bernama) -- The frequent inspections carried out by the Peninsular Malaysia Maritime Department (JLS) on boats and ferries aim to raise awareness among boat and ferry operators to ensure that the services provided by them are safe.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the government had taken serious measures on safety following several mishaps at sea, although they were not as serious because the number of fatalities was not high compared to road accidents.

"The JLS will carry out safety campaigns so that there is awareness among boat operators to ensure that the ferries and boats used always carry adequate safety equipment in case of an emergency," he said when visiting the Terengganu State Marine Department, here today.

Abdul Rahim said currently there were 14 locations with ferry services in the whole country of which, three were in the Northern Region, Central Region (one), Southern Region (four), Eastern Region (two) and Labuan Region (four).

He said that during the last three years, there had been a reduction in compounds imposed on boat and ferry operators with only 166 compounds issued last year compared with 244 issued in 2009 and 211 compounds in 2008.
