Maritime agency beefs up security

THE Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has beefed up security in Johor waters following five robbery cases within a week.
MMEA southern region enforcement head First Admiral Zulkifli Abu Bakar said the robbers were not pirates but foreigners who were targeting merchant vessels ferrying cargoes.

Their modus operandi was to climb onboard at night when crew members were asleep before forcing the crew to open the store to loot the valuables.

Zulkifli said the robbers normally moved in groups of between four and 10 to avoid being detected by enforcement officers.

"They would get onboard by climbing up vessels with a rope. This usually occurred between 3am and 5am.

"Previously, they did not take the belongings of the crew. However, in recent cases they took everything.

"Initial investigations revealed the robbers were foreigners from a neigbouring country," he said.

Zulkifli advised vessel owners and crew members to be vigilant.
