KUANTAN: It is time the turtle sanctuary in Cherating here be upgraded, not only as a centre of information and conservation but also as a tourist attraction.

State Tourism, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Shafik Fauzan Sharif said the sanctuary needed more modern facilities such as multimedia equipment.

“The turtle sanctuary serves as an educational and research centre as well as a tourist site,’’ he said after releasing some 300 turtle hatchlings here on Sunday.

Shafik Fauzan added that the centre looked rundown with certain parts of the fencing already broken.

The sanctuary is managed by the state fisheries department.

Shafik Fauzan also said he was made to understand that the department had set aside RM100,000 to upgrade the centre’s parking lot.

“For me, the parking lot is not that urgent, as carrying out repair work and introducing new features to make the centre more attractive and serve its purpose is more important.

“The allocation which is said to be provided under the East Coast Economic Region project should be utilised to upgrade the centre,’’ he added.

Shafik Fauzan said he would meet the department’s director soon to discuss the matter, adding that the state tourism agency could provide the necessary assistance.
