Tourist Boat Exploded Off Mersing

Post Number:#1  Postby John F SeaDemon » Sat Oct 13, 2007 3:27 pm

I just happen to see a crawler on TV announcing that a tourist boat exploded off Mersing. No mention of whether it is an LOB or a passenger ferry.  According to the Mersing Police, survivors have been brought to the Mersing hospital.

18.00, Tioman. We have heard that some survivors were also brought to Tioman. No hard news, but it appears that it was a ferry out of Mersing headed for Tioman. No confirmations, but we have heard that there have been fatalities. Will keep you updated on any other news we hear.

Press Release from Bernama, not good news I am afraid .....    :sad10:

JOHOR BAHARU, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Four people died and four others were injured when a ferry cruising from the Genting Jetty in Pulau Tioman to the Mersing Jetty caught fire past noon Saturday.

The ferry carrying 100 passengers was seven nautical miles from the Genting Jetty when the fire occurred at 12.30pm.

A Mersing police spokesman confirmed the incident.

He said the dead and the injured passengers had been taken to the Mersing Hospital.

Police were now gathering information on the victims, he added.

The ferry was overloaded according to the 8pm news on TV3

4 people died, and 5 in serious conditions. It could have been worse since the ferry was full. But still it is a tragedy.

Four drown after ferry catches fire (updated)
By TEH ENG HOCK

MERSING: Four people drowned and five others were injured when they jumped overboard a ferry, which caught fire, on the way to Tioman Island from Mersing on Saturday.

Mersing OCPD DSP Harun Arshad said fishing boats, tourist boats and the marine police, which was dispatched to the scene to rescue the 98 passengers following a distress call, plucked out 94 people and four dead bodies from the water.

Police have identified the dead as Hoo Lee Lan, 67, from Kuala Lumpur, Hong See Tiew, 53, and Teh Siew Lian, 52, both from Klang, and Tee Moi @ Haw Lee Maoi, 68, from Batu Pahat.

According to Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Hussin Ismail, all 98 passengers jumped overboard when the ferry caught fire at about 12.30pm Saturday.

The police have identified the injured as Chong Ling Yi, seven, Ngow Lee Leng, 14, Lee Ling Yin, 35, and Yong Sait Yen, 26. Police could not confirm the identity of the fifth victim.

The five injured have been sent to the Mersing Hospital for treatment.

At the time of the fire, the ferry was about seven nautical miles from Tioman Islang, near Rompin, Pahang.

According to DSP Harun, police are still mounting a search and rescue operation to look for more survivors. He said, “We believe there could be a few more people onboard the ferry who were not listed on the passenger list.”

have been in overloaded boats couple of times... what's shocking is that apparently based on the tv news, the operator's operating license expired late last year.  Wonder what the authorities have to say on that!

Very Sad Indeed.

Very pity, most of the victim were old folks(above 50). Its a costly lesson to other ferry operator not to cut corners in the future.

Condolence to the family.

Hi, read in the front page of New Strait Times today a group of malaysian divers took pictures of evidence of Overloading of passengers and luggages blocking the exits. Kudos for making them known to the appropriate media.

When you know the ferry or boat is overcrowded ...why did you board it at the 1st place?

If you are inside & is crowded, you do have a choice ....leave the ferry or the boat.

Dont wait for something bad to happen & then complaint about it .... Take action, the choice is yours.

Safety First & Fun Later.

i guess one have to be there and then talk abt it, and i guess those divers tried to prove that ferry operator did not heed or take any action though a mishap did happen 2 days earlier.

That thought crossed my mind.  Tioman would be overwhelmed being the closest island on the east coast to Singapore, JB and KL. All boats would have been overcrowded. If you are a seasoned diver you would know this already.  You could always choose to go to other destinations like the Terengganu islands.

While it is good that someone had highlighted the issue, Snafu is correct that it is always the passenger's choice to board or not. You the holidaymaker created the demand, they the operators create the supply. And when there is excessive demand, this is the immediate answer. The other answer would be to postpone your trip in total, or postpone your departure from the island as I would normally do EVEN WHEN I USED TO WORK THEN. If you could buy dive equipment and go on dive trips, you can afford one day NPL if you cannot take EL or extend your annual leave.

Don't drive a Ferrari if you cannot afford its road tax.
