Help Our Penyu (HOPE or Persatuan Sukarelawan Membantu Penyu Kita Malaysia (registered Malaysian name)) are looking for an intern to be part of a young community based turtle conservation project in the Perhentian Islands.

The organisation is the first independent (not formed by the government or university institutes) non-profit organistion focused on nesting sea turtle conservation throughout Terengganu.

As the Perhentian Island Community Liaison and Education Intern you will be placed at the forefront of our work within the community.  You will be seen as the face of the project in the village and this should be considered at all times.

You will be responsible along with your colleagues for implementing and ensuring the continuation of an effective conservation education program within the local school, facilitating community participation in events and workshops initiated by Help Our Penyu and facilitating volunteers involvement within the community.

As part of a small team you are also expected to provide cover for your colleagues and as such should ensure you have a full understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
Key Duties

    Work with your colleagues to develop a curriculum for the weekly after school club that effectively teaches the key aspects of conservation as applicable to your target community.
    Ensure each lesson is structured with a detailed lesson plan in place.
    Ensure the timetabling of each lesson allowing for breaks.
    Ensure a level of control within each lesson.
    Identify and source appropriate resources.
    Facilitate the involvement of volunteers and your colleagues through detailed preparation sessions and ongoing translations for non BM speakers.
    Identify and utilize individual strengths amongst the volunteers and your colleagues.
    Regularly review the program with your colleagues.
    Ensure safety measures are implemented through detailed risk assessment and actionable protocols.


    Conduct presentations regarding Help Our Penyu to interested parties.
    Relay all formal and informal discussions relating to Help Our Penyu back to the Project Manager and your colleagues.
    Act as a professional and accessible representative for Help Our Penyu at all times.


    Undertake and demonstrate planning of community events and workshops as agreed with the Project Manager and Project Director.
    Ensure the fair and equal opportunity to participate in said events and workshops for each member of the community.
    Conduct a social survey in the village.
    Organise with the help of long-term volunteers handicraft sessions for the villagers.
    Hold regular discussions with members of the community to assess their wishes for the role of Help Our Penyu within their community.


    Facilitate the village section of the volunteer program, ensuring the safety and well being of participants at all times.
    Undertake inspections and assessments of accommodation, host families and planned activities prior to the volunteer’s arrival.
    Ensure all bookings are made for the program components, including boats, traditional meals and accommodation.
    Provide information to the volunteer to ensure cultural sensitivity, understanding of each activity and provide a feeling of ease whilst they are participating.
    Be accessible to the volunteer at all times.
    Ensure volunteer funds are evenly spent across a number of businesses.

General Requirements

    Ensure a good level of communication between yourself, Project Manager and colleagues at all times.
    Undertake and demonstrate consistent planning of your workload and adhere to set deadlines.
    Meet regularly with the Project Manager as the timetable of the project allows.
    Assist the Project Manager in completing Risk Assessments, Operating Procedures and program content as required.
    Complete reports as required.
    Provide cover for colleague’s leave and illness as required.
    Ensure good financial management by detailing proposed and actual expenditure and filing receipts.
    Travel for the purposes of work following agreed timetabling and budgets.
    Provide adequate notice of any travel needed whether work related or personal.
    Must display a professional example to volunteers and colleagues at all times.
    Must adhere to all safety measures, protocols and procedures as directed by Help Our Penyu.
    Must notify Project Manager of issues that affect the completion of set tasks.
    Take on tasks in addition to the descriptions above as delegated by the Project Manager that are deemed fair, achievable within the present task load and within the person’s capability.

Essential Personal Specification

    Previous experience in teaching.
    Able to speak Bahasa Malaysia and English.
    Good communication skills and confident public speaker.
    Good level of organization and ability to meet deadlines.
    Competent in using Microsoft Office.
    A flexible and adaptive approach.
    Able to live and work alone.

    Environmental knowledge.
    Teaching qualification.
    Experience in teaching English to adults.
    Good swimmer.
    Interest in art and handicraft.
    Malaysian driving license.

    Male – due to living in the Perhentian village.
