Thank You To Volunteers & Donors!

Post Number:#67  Postby pummkin » Sun Dec 21, 2008 12:20 am

We anticipated the arrival of the kids from the various homes from 8:30am at the Maybank Training Centre in Bangi with some volunteers and members of Kids Scuba Team already at the scene as early as 8am. They had been preparing the goodie bags plus the school bags sponsored by members of ItaliaAuto Club, an Alfa Romeo and Fiat cars owners and enthusiasts club; MUW, Malaysian Underwater, the largest diving community forum in Malaysia and generous individuals who made this happen. Kids Scuba is the largest scuba training facility for kids in the world and the idea was mooted by the founder and Instructor Trainer, Syed Abdul Rahman. He got his team of instructors and dive leaders together with volunteer professionals to let 30 under-privileged kids to have a frolicking good time in the pool using scuba.

Some of the sponsored items include storybooks, notepads, keychains, towel, stationery sets, chocolate and such plus a spread of breakfast consisting of nasi lemak, roti canai, curry puffs, free flow of tea, juices, brownies and very delicious buffet lunch at the cafeteria. A & L Adventure sponsored beautifully wrapped prizes for the kids who answered quizzes after the marine talk correctly and you can see the cheer on their faces as they were given these pressies! YA Craft company (Tommy Yap) sponsored a batik painting session with a team on hand to help these kids paint their own marine life motif masterpieces to take home for remembrance. EdScuba, a dive centre, and its directors were present to assist Kids Scuba with the logistics and handling in and out of the water. They sponsored snacks and water for the volunteers. We had families coming to support the effort, mostly in the water to ease the fears of those who has never been in a pool before. Dr. Ruben helped ferry the kids from PJ with L.C., director of A & L, to the pool. Dr. Nurul bought storybooks for all.

Some kids were as young as six or seven (so cute!) right up till 15 but were all very well behaved. I had to converse between Malay, English and sign language in order for them to understand my talk using video programmes but it was an experience that I won’t forget. Before long, the kids pulled their chairs forward, about a foot away from where I was sitting beside the TV and we had a cosy question, answer and laughing session! Much as I would like to have some of them sit on my lap while I explained about the turtles and cleaning stations, I had to exercise restraint as I believe all of them should get equal attention. Colin, a parent and volunteer, had the task of bringing the rotating teams to jalan-jalan around the park, showing them birds in an aviary before they got into the pool.

The event came to a close at a prize/certificate giving ceremony just after lunch. Syed presented them with something that would go towards their life’s experiences’ testimony in future and we left with a fuzzy feeling in our hearts knowing that many generous individuals like you, made all this possible.

Syed and his team including MSDA would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being there in person and in spirit, etching a priceless moment in the lives of 30 little ones, giving hope and cheer to them for a Christmas to remember………thank you again!

And Merry Christmas!

Footnote:- Can everyone who was present with their cameras, post up pictures of the entire event here? Thank you!
If I'm not here, I'm underwater...!
