Sotong, ikan, roti, susu

Post Number:#1  Postby elaine » Sun Nov 12, 2006 12:29 am

Hola fellow underwater pals!

I'm elaine from Singapore!  :D
Still quite a newbie in *pretending to be an ikan* but trying hard to improve skills and bribe more people to become my dive buddies!

My melayu is as lousy as my buoyance at the moment - only know roti, ikan, sotong, beef rendang, kueh kueh, susu, air, ayam, pisang (basically the food names  ;D)
Please teach me more useful malay words for diving ok? haha

If anyone's coming to Singapore, can let me know! I will find time to bring u jalan jalan and drink susu.

Cheers,
Elaine

Maybe you went to the wrong places to find the susu. haha

Woah! Such warm welcome from everyone!  :) Feel great to be here!

I've just watch this video clip with my friend of an octopus eating a shark!
The shark is about 3-4ft long! It's amazing but kinda scary...
Have anyone seen such BIG octopus?

Octopus is not sotong right? Sotong's squid right?  :-?

Hi Elaine!

Welcome to MUW! Roti pisang with susu sounds quite nice.

The malay language was never meant for scientific terminologies or for direct-talks. It's always about beating around the bush, flowery-essays etc. Sotong is the generic term for squids, cuttlefishes and octopuses. Squids are sotong, cuttlefishes are sotong katak (generally), smaller ones are cumi-cumi, and octopuses are sotong kurita, presumably after the WWII Japanese admiral Takeo Kurita whose Japanese navy flag looked like an octopus.

SeaDemon, I didn't know sotong kurita was named after a Japanese admiral. Learn something new everyday eh. Thanks for that bit of trivia.

And to Elaine, welcome to the forum  :)

But our Manglish/Singlish is widely used in here...so be free to use them! ;)

oh YES mephisto! it's in an aquarium!
I wanna share that video but i dunno how to go about doing it coz someone sent it to me in an email.

it's amazing and scary! i dun wanna bump into that octopuss la...
quite surprise that it has such strong hunter's instinct although it lives in an aquarium

the underwater world in singapore is open for "dive-walking" haha but i dun tink the octopuss here is so garang.

sugar cane with lemon = gula tongkat limau?
i love the malaysian teh limau.. refreshing!  ;D
