welcome to the club.
you can get your open water cert for about 1100-1300 all in. you juts missed the east coast dive sites as its going to be closed to monsoon really soon.
you can try obtaining your license at the straits of malacca which is not the best around otherwise sabah would be an awesome place to dive too :)

i really just have to bud in right now..
sgojita4 welcome. Do find cheap affordable BUT worth it dive instructor to teach you.
let me just comment that i have encounter quite a few divers with licence but not enough basic knowledge of scuba skills in their open water.
When you want to survey you survey What is PADI, SSI, SDI, NAUI, IANTD. These 4 are the common diving schools currently offer in Malaysia and their diving offer differs from each other.
The difference bcoz
1) the brand name. Right now PADI is most expensive compare to rest because they have text book, table chart and other materials.
2) the instructor - if the instructor from a 5 star PADI dive centre, the price could be high.
3) the place where you going to stay for your open water training - stay at a resort 5 star, u'll get very expensive package.
Do not only survey for price, take note on the instructor who you are going to learn with. When you met with a diver , just ask previously from where they did their OW and how was the instructor. I know a rookie diver had a very excellent teacher just by the way they store their gears and wear their equipment on their body.

Totally agree with Run on this..which agency you go under, its essentially the same things which will be taught. The major difference is the quality of your instructor. Dont shop around for price..cheap does not mean good. A good instructor will impart good dive habits for the rest of your diving life and what you learn may just save your ass one day. Remember, you pay peanuts you get monkey!

I highly recommend my instructor but you will have to fly to KK. A kiwi.. very strict on safety which I think it's good.

dont go cheap - this is your life you talking about, and the right instructor will determine if you fall in love with scuba diving at first sight.
just budget something like RM900 for course and the other costs will depend on your expectations like accomodation, food, travel method, et al. so about RM 1500 or so. but then after that, your world changes
if u want i can recommend instructors. or there's always instructors lurking around in this forum :D
i'm right now feeling withdrawal symptoms..
