Dear Dive Doc.

Hail!!!

mephisto family has recently aquired the 2 equipment above to monitor the blood pressure of family members and most importantly to see the progress of mother mephisto who is on high blood pressure medication.

The box, the sphygmomanometer, the stethiscope.
Image

the family doctor has taught me how to use it but i have these questions:

1. do you need to close the hole on the back of the stethoscope when listening thru it?
2. sometimes i dont hear the pulse...am i suppose to put it on the arteri? please advice on stethoscope positioning.
3. the doctor says that the reading when you start to hear the pulse and the reading on the last pulse you hear is your blood pressure. for example 120/80. what is the normal range for blood pressure and what does it mean when the reading is above and below the normal reading?
4. please give tips and advice on the tecnique of using the above equipment.

Hmm...not using the digital ones from Omron? Would have been simpler.

You can actually feel the pulse...when you don't feel the pulse the first time as you let the pressure down, that's the systolic reading. The second time is the diastolic reading.

My dad has both this manual AND digital ones.. ermmm.. till today the manual one is sitting on the table collecting dust coz none of us non-medically trained people know how to use it. Use la the digital one, easier. Press button, press again, squezzy it goes and yelp in pain and wallah... the reading is there.

Dear mephisto,

U should have gotten the digital one... easier but since u have this...
1. No need to close the hole but it actually has different usage. The stets has 2 side... the diaphragm (the flat surface) and the bell (the concave surface). They have different function on the type of sound we are trying to hear.

2. Position at above the artery-  but the aim is to inflate the cuff to compress and occlude the artery 1st and slowly deflate (at the same time hear for the sounds of when the occlusion is 1st overcomed).... at thsi pressure it is the systolic pressure

Then you still listen and lower the pressure till there is no more sound- diastolic pressure. why it's like that will take me more than 1 post to explain... Over coffee is easier.. so next time when I'm back boleh la

3. Blood pressure depends on a few things: And the range varies according to age and sex... roughly 120/80 but older can have normal up to 140/90

LAST... bro get the digital onelah... yang ni you can get confused especially the diastolic pressure which you are supposed to hear a muffled sound before it totally disapears...
Digital- you mom can use on her own... just press the button

It is only about RM 250-350...

Hope that answers your Q's. Guess divedoc is busy...

Thanks for the lengthy explaination zzz, now I understand the concept better. One thing, your explaination has no mention of which body part we should wrap the thing around, and which part to listen to.

Someone may misunderstood the instruction and wrap it around the wrong body part... ;D ;D

Hi bro... True analog is more accurate... but it's only accurate if the person reading it is competent... even after years of doin it occasionally I have difficulty in getting an accurate manual reading....

TT... boleh... next weekend kot.... will be back in KL... bring the gadgets and we'll have a practice session...
