Mabul diving - wetsuit needed?

Post Number:#1  Postby Chai » Wed Oct 23, 2013 8:04 pm

Hi guys,

I am going on my first dive trip to Mabul Island next week. Do I need to use a wetsuit?
I remember when diving at Pulau Gaya, the water was comfortable without wetsuit, just shorts and T-shirt. Should I expect the same in Mabul?

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Chai,

I would have to same water temperature will be about the same on Mabul as everywhere else in Malaysia. The average temperature is around 29c, lowest will be about 28C.
I've also heard from DM's that Sipadan water temperature dropping to 26C-27C but it's rare to encounter such temperature.

Have fun and dive safe!

Cheers

well it depend on how many dives per day......and whether u can tahan sejuk or not.....
if u gonna do 5-6 dives per day, it is better with wetsuit hehe.....
2-3 dives per day, rash guard & box shot will do......

Hi Raffidi, Narco, Mamakpenang, thanks for the info. I think I will do max 3 dives a day, so I guess wetsuit not necessary. Thanks again!

Just a minute ago, the dive resort replied to my query and said that wetsuit is required when diving Mabul and usually divers use wetsuit there... Err..??? Now I am confused..

actually wetsuit is better for your own body protection, in case you scratch or hit parts of your body with coral.....
2-3 dives a day at mabul, rash guard with box shot will just fine.

Ok, thanks for your input, mamakpenang. Just wanted to confirm this so that I can decide whether to take my own wetsuit with me when I fly - despite the "sports equipment" fee Airasia introduced.
(Had unpleasant experience diving in rented wetsuit of wrong size, or with holes. An dirty mask and snorkel too.)

haha....didn't fly with air asia quite sometimes.....
"sport equipment" fee, normally apply to golfer because they cannot hide their golf club......to long maybe hehe....
normally i never declare i was carrying diving equipment, just normal luggage......so far no problemo.....

As long as this "sports" equipment are not expose it's not a problem. If you're the type to pack your gears in a mesh bag and check-in, be ready to pay the sports equipment fee!
Good luck, have fun and dive safe Chai....cheers!

Hi mamakpenang & raffidi,

Thanks for the tips. I would consider that...hehe. Can save RM90 :D

Actually, I had a very long surface interval - my last dive was in mid 2010. After living landlocked in Kampar among the hills for such a long time, I am not even sure whether I can still dive. So, my mission on Mabul is to do a refresher course and to see if I still enjoy diving :)

What would be the best/convenient way to pack the gear? I was thinking if I had to pay for the RM90 fee, I might as well bring along my fins, snorkel, mask, wetsuit, booties.

Welcome back and hope you have a blast and find your love in diving again!
Yes a very good idea to do a refresher and dive to your ability and not bother about other divers even if you use up your air fast.

Just pack your stuff in a normal trolley bag or any bag for the matter. As long as equipment are not expose the will be no extra charge.

Hi Raffidi, Narco and Mamakpenang,

I have just returned home this afternoon from my Mabul trip. Thanks for all your pre-trip tips. I ended up bringing my wetsuit (shorty), snorkel, mask, snorkel fins, dive fins, glove, etc, packing all items as usual for my checked in baggage - saved RM90 sport equipment fee in the end.
