Diving @ Tioman

Post Number:#1  Postby maplin » Mon Jan 14, 2013 4:58 pm

Hi, Im planning for a short dive trip to Tioman from 15-17th Feb 2013. Just wanted to know if the monsoon season will be over by that time? Will the DC will be operating and how about the visibility during that time? Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for all the information. Will contact the DC and ferry service before my trip.  BTW, which place in Tioman Island will be the best for shore dives?

Again thanks for the input.

Which spot has the best shore dive? Fishes never stay one spot. They come and goes except for that redang's marine park giant garopa.

most juvenile fishes in schools take shelter under the jetties. Got hard corals. viz can be un-inviting since it sandy bottom
lots of seaurchin. very shallow dive less than 10m.
Better do night dive for shore dive more to see than day time.
These are all the same for all villages.

i am not -all knowing. I give info base on what i experienced myself.
I especially love divers who love to dive and experience the life under the sea even if the time limited to 40min or less than
an hour or more.
Sharing this short moment with the underwater creatures are priceless.
i wish i could see and share more.
Another piece of heaven on earth.
uh getting sentimental. Not enuf salt water.

Genting and Paya's shore dive is relatively flay about 8-9 metres all the way out.

You have to swim about 15-20 minutes from Paya shore entry to reach a drop off (that will hit 25 metres sloping reef. I've seen beautiful macro stuff there. But during the swim out I do not recount encountering a lot of life.

Salang however has a perpetual school of fusiliers, yellow tail barracuda and more often than not, a school of trevally at its jetty. Almost guarantee can see. And there's i've sighted some rare nudis and frogfishes near to the jetty.

I'll second blurblur cause I seen it myself...3 juvenile frogfish actually, not directly under the jetty but about 50m right of the jetty below a boay with a rope tied down to a concrete.

I have checked and most of the DC only start operation from 28 feb. So I've decided to change my schedule. Planning the trip from 10-12 march. Will be putting up in Salang a day(2 boat dives and at least 3 shore dives) but not sure which DC and then will go to ABC with Eco Divers (4 boat dives and as many shore dives). Heard that there is a wreck at ABC shore but need to use boat (around 100m from shore).

ooo this is new to me. I didn't know there is a wreck at ABC? i know there are wrecks at the marine park tekek which is located beside the ABC.
Last year i joined COT and stayed at ABC. So back and forth from ABC to tekek marine park was not that far but it was tiring cause i had to climb some stairs to cross between ABC and tekek.
When you stay at ABC , watch out for monkeys. Lots of them. Keep the door and windows shut at all times. At night let loose and have a taste at the famous pizza plaze near to the nazri's chalet (not the nazri's cabana).

i c then my advise bring a torch. The water very murky there. If you dive at high noon with good sunlight , the viz would be in mid range 10m.
If you dive 3pm onwards with no sun, the viz is less than 10m.
if you get lucky , you could have a good viz.
ok then hope all these information will help you out.
I only go to tioman via LOB cause the ferry service is unbearable. i rarely do shore dives at tioman.
i did shore dives there but that was before i discovered LOB. LOB rocks!

sealantis is Ok. Located at Kg Paya. Also a just a walking distance to a waterfall. Very refreshing after a dive trip.
Just make sure what kind of boat you will be having. A bumboat or a speedboat?
Kg paya nearest dive sites are Tomok and Renggis. It will be far a bit to the reach the hot dive spots.

i found this very informative review from a diver soo to be DM stephanie :P she might also be MUW member. Wishing her all the best in her training
