Anybody knows what this is?

Post Number:#1  Postby krezza » Sat Dec 29, 2012 1:38 pm

Hi All,

I've been silently reading the forums for a while now and decided to get out of my shell and put up my first post, so hello everyone! and hope to share many things with everyone.

Me and my buddies just got back from Koh Lipe for a short diving trip between 22-25 December and we came across a 'spider' like creature which was crawling up the coral walls. It first looked like seaweed from afar but upon closer inspection... Sialla!! that 'thing' had like 50 legs on it and it was MOVING!!. So we went near the thing, close enough not to get attacked, zoomed in and took a photo.

We brought the photo back and the crew at the dive centre didn't know what it was. The photo is attached below... What is this?

Look like Oxycomanthus bennetti a.k.a feather star to me, in an upside down position.

Yup featherstar.

Crinoid shrimps live in there.

A featherstar on my thigh

Krezza, I guess you haven't dived long enough to know that if you thought the featherstar is dangerous, it's like thinking a cotton ear bud is a weapon. .

Lol, nice pic Toodus. Yah, it looks quite intimidating seeing it climbing up the wall and its size was quite big.

Anyhow, thanks!
