i can only say its unnatural. The locals need some money from the tourist and they come out with this idea.
We will just have to wait and see what will the result be like in next the 10 years or so. Hope the animal can survive to find its own food if one day the locals decided to stop from feeding them.

If people have claimed to have seen whalesharks and I ask where and they answer "Donsol" or "Oslob" , then it is as though they have not seen one. It isn't real real. It just is not. So, like Shania's Twain's song "That Don't Impress Me Much"

Those who saw whalesharks in Tenggol, Perhentian, Sipadan, etc..... are the true whaleshark sightings.

"So you've seen whalesharks in Donsol"
THAT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH !!!

Well....if we needed to see all animals in the wild, I don't think we'll be seeing too much of any of them...anywhere!!...lol...

I think the locals who are making some income in this manner will surely find a way around the propeller issue pretty quick. Actually all they need is a cover and grill around the prop. (It's on all marine lifeboats so nothing new to design)

As for the whale sharks...getting fed and not getting killed is a pretty good option in todays overfished world.

Same applies to Pandas, right?

I honestly think it is a win-win situation.

Just watched a documentary on polar bears losing their habitat and food....maybe we should think of feeding them too??
Good education leads to good conservation!!

Toodus, I think you are a bit too harsh.  There is controversy about Oslob because of the feeding but in Donsol there is none.

What about seeing hammerheads in Layang-Layang?  Most of us depend on the DMs to shows us the shoal while we stay in shallower waters.  If you go to Lembeh or Raja Ampat 90% of the weird things you photograph will be spotted by DMs.

Some divers may not be impressed by a person being a rescue diver.  Think about it.

Hi Seamoth,

Does Donsol provide feeding of the whalesharks? I don't know. I am assuming Donsol is feeding the whalesharks. If they are not, then it's my bad.
But Oslob does.  And when Oslob feeds the whalesharks, this will throw a monkey wrench into the whole migratory route of the whalesharks. Maybe that is why we don't see whalesharks anymore in Tenggol because their migratory route has been altered.

Seamoth, the topic here is feeding whalesharks.....we don't feed hammerheads do we? There is no frame of reference at all with DMs but there is when it comes to a Rescue Diver like me....

Anyway, no feeding , no zoos ...all animals should be roaming wild and free....

it was really awesome to have seen 2 whalesharks swimming at temple of the sea perhentian in the year 2008.
Hope one day they will make their way back to malaysian waters.

Toodus, I was referring to the above quotation.  Sounds a bit harsh to me that's all.  As far as I know there is no feeding in Donsol; this is why the season for snorkelling with them is short.  I am actually against feeding the sharks in Oslob.  They feed the sharks in Cenderawasih Bay as well.

The moment we dive (esp. if we carry a camera) we affect the environment; it may not be so obvious as with the whale sharks.  Imagine the poor blue-ringed octopus or the pygmy seahorse being subjected to hundreds of strobe flashes everyday if they stay around.

No hard feelings.
