Q&A

About Ivan:

Ivan started underwater photography in 2001, two years after taking the plunge into the oceans. His desire to share the beauty and colors of what was below the waves to his friends and having no prior background in photography, he horned in on his skills and knowledge through interactions and viewing other underwater photographers' works. Ivan's hard work finally paid off when his images were published in a local dive magazine in 2004. In 2006, he was recruited into Scuba Diver Australasia magazines as a Field Editor.

Throughout this time, Ivan has written over 30 articles from various dive magazines to in-flight magazines promoting or covering issues pertaining to the oceans. His love for Manta rays inspired him to use his photographic skills to catalogue the Mantas in Bali, indexing over 53 individuals there over a span of 3 weeks. Self funded and supported by a small group of contributors he made his dreams of understanding and observing Mantas possible.

By 2009, Olympus Singapore recognized his underwater imagery and awarded him the title of Ambassador for Underwater Photography. His has continued to spread and share his love for the ocean through the images he has taken through public talks and exhibitions. Ivan has held his first solo exhibition in Singapore at Velocity Shipping Center and as recent as December 2009, had 2 images selected in "Gift From The Sea - The Finest Pictures of Ocean Geographic". While the year seemed busy for Ivan, a revival of a technique burst into the scene when he started to photograph nudibranchs with a mirror underwater. This soon caught on with many other photographers as the subject became clean from it's background and yet showing the not often seen ventral side.Â

In 2010, his images caught the attention of Ned DeLoach and Paul Humann when they were compiling images for their new creature identification book - Reef Creature Identification - Tropical Pacific. 5 of his images have been selected and published in this extraordinary book.

Through social networking, his images can be seen and inspire others to the beauty of the underwater world. Yet his subtle message of saying no to sharks-fins resonates through his actions. Ivan has just started his works to promote the ocean and what lies beneath but his concern that through rapid modernization and global warming, his generation might be the last to have the opportunity to experience first hand the wonders of the ocean.
