Olympus PT030 crack - not recall yet

Post Number:#1  Postby bobo » Fri Jul 20, 2007 6:30 pm

May be this would be the appropriate thread although it still not recall yet.

The purposed is to have members or non members submit their crack housing (only Olympus PT030 with SP350) pictures here and send me your details stated:

name, contact number, how long u use the housing, where did u bought it.

Please feel free to post the picture of the crack housing with a maximum long lenght at 8 in with 72dpi.

I noticed that the screw at the metal top part of the housing was not long enough to be screw in all the way down. This leave behind a millimeter of trapped air bubble at the screw end and this is the cause of the crack. I’m sure the crack did not happen purposely.

Although no water seen on any of these housing while diving, but... hehehe i'm sure u dun want to dive with the crack getting bigger.

here are three housing send in to me by email and an email to Olympus Malaysia had been send today.

Cheers

Bobo, maybe I should start a different thread but since it is related to the Olympus housing, so I just highlight it here.

Just bought the SP550UZ with the PT037 housing last 2 weeks.  Was upset coz the housing shutter realese can't really press the shutter release on the camera.  I had to put a peice of paper in order to make it work. Any other people using the same product encounter the same thing?  Had to complaint to the Olympus...

Guys, with regards to the Olympus Housings, I have already feedback to them in 2006.
The report from Olympus Singapore after they brought up to Japan is that 0.01% of the housings world wide has this problem and does not warrant as defective product.
Not only does it appear in the SP-550 housing but started since the C-7070 series when they introduced the U shaped hot-shoe mount on their housing.
To-date, I've seen more than 20 housings that have the same problem. Olympus Singapore will not warrant any replacements because

1) It is hard to prove that the housing is new or even so with a receipt
2) the number of dives it has done
3) how deep it has gone
4) how the user has handled the housing
5) if anything has been mounted on the hot-shoe
6) Warranty for housings are only valid in Japan

However, I do wish those that are seeking help from Olympus Malaysia to see if they can do anything but highly unlikely as they report to 2 main offices.
Hong Kong and Japan.

One of my customers wrote to them and Japan asked him to send his housing back for evaluation. If it is manufacturing fault, they will replace but if it is not you'll have to pay to get your housing back. Note that you have to ship to them at your own cost as well.

Best of luck!

Why are they making it difficult for customers/oly users to get replacements to a defected product?

From what i have observed, seems to me that the 0.1% of the defected casings are all in Malaysia.

The other ensures you continue to do so for the rest of your life...

1st, they have not admitted it is defected.. so how to get it replaced? Any replacements will be out of goodwill.
Trust me, not only in Malaysia, Singapore too loads of them. Majority of the housings just goes on being used as paperweights together with the cameras if it has flooded.

That is why I use only the camera and get Ikelite housings.

If this is the case, and if u still want to use Oly cameras, get the sw series which is waterproof.  At least if it gets flooded, ur camera is still safe.. if not don't use Oly...  :crybaby2:

yeah that is a good idea but SW cameras performance not too fantastic in my opinion. For the price you pay, might as well get a canon. agreee?

I suggest to continue to feedback to Bobo,

I will help to write to Oly Japan directly too

0.01% is still consider defective and replacement should be made even it is 1 pc if it is due to manufacturer mistake.

My housing has been taken by Olympus Malaysia for checking but still no news until now. I'm going to see Masaharu Okubo (if u now who this guy is  ;)) and let him see the picture of crack housing.

Ivan FYI, Olympus Singapore also is manage by Olympus Malaysia but they said they never get any news on any housing crack from Oly Spore, may be the guys over the straits never send any report to Malaysia. Please tell any of ur Oly Spore friends to send a report to Malaysia, they are waiting.

Wish me luck with Masaharu Okubo.

Probably they sent it to Japan direct.
I used to correspond with Seiki before he was posted to Europe. For the servicing issue, can look for the "helpful" Mr Goh. He is always the one that does the checking.

I have washed my hands off this matter here in Singapore because it is taking far too much time and too little people are even bothered to reply me.

Today when I got to the office after some hectic assignments outside, was surprised got a package at my desk.
Image

I tot someone playing a fool with me and giving me a majerine stock for a month.

but after a peek, it seems that its not a majerine but something look blue and a plastic bag
Image

A closer look reveal that its something red in a plastic!
Image

A while, I couldn't recognize it but the itchy hand automatically came in handy... to look more deeper...
Image

and to my surprise.. something look familiar that had been away for quite a long time...
Image

Its my long lost repaired PT030 housing... (The oly man said they repaired mine)
Image

Suddenly the mood is on top of the world again, with the bonus announcement and this arrival...
I was surprised they said they repaired the crack... (see early post) but after a thorough check it seems they did a really good repairing... was wondering, the japs are good in this.
Image

Image

Image

Image

But after detail checking... found out, its a NEW housing... why... the plastic cover of this knob is still intact
Image and

the serial number is different
Image

hmmm a call made to Oly stated that its a new housing and they change it for me and no reason given on the crack housing...

So others who having the crack housing, sorry guys, cant help anymore, they dun wan to answer weather its a recall or not...

and they give me an E system cap and a Oly cleaning cloth too...
Image

hmmm.. so guys... do make noise to Oly and hopefully you get the same privillage as a journalist...  ;).

I will try to ask how about the others too... keep your finger cross....  ;)

errr.... spazm, sorry... the lens will be utilised again....  ;)
