Face Mask Maintenance....its about time la dey!

Face Mask Maintenance....its about time la dey!

Post Number:#1  Postby MACHA » Tue Dec 11, 2007 1:31 am

Dey fellas...its the monsoon time, not much of diving...was taking a closer look at my mask...ACHHHOOOO! Horrible la, so ITs ABOUT TIME to do some cleaning job here la.
So I would like to share to ya'll the Brickfields ( or Redang ) style of cleaning & getting rid of those unwanted stuff on your mask...hope this will help.  ;)

Face mask type : 2 pieces lens
Model : Cressi Sub MATRIX
Things needed : Shampoo, pail, screwdriver, toothbrush ( serious la macha! ), Silicone Spray.

        Image
Be very careful when taking off the frames, screws or clips....as for this model its easy, so please refer to manufacturer manual
          on how to disassemble.
Seperate each part and take a look on all parts esp.where fungus encrusting.
Soak everything in water mix shampoo for 24 hours. Shampoo is suitable rather than other detergents seems to be more
stronger & might harm the silicone.  ;)

        Image
After 24 hours soak, brush gently all parts esp. silicone & rinse with freshwater.

        Image
Wipe with clean cloth & dry in cool dry place....spray silicone components with Silicone Spray, this will protect & makes it softer.

        Image
Insert the lens & its ideal to clean only lenses with dishwasher detergent...make sure lenses are mark left & right.

        Image
This is the tricky bit...to put in the frame..slow & easy, everything in right placing...caution might break the frame.

        Image
Cressi Sub MATRIX mask has 2 frames & is attached with a screw...so it makes assembling it easier...settle!

        Image
Finally put in the side clips....voila

        Image
And dont forget to check your strap for any damage or wear off.....place your mask on face perform the
"sniff test"  if it pull into place by suction & stay as you inhale..its ready to use.
please check on the lens, skirt & framing again if not accordingly.

So I hope this might help some of ya'll on taking care of your mask...well I've been practising this method for 8 years since i was a snorkelling guide & it doesnt harm most brands/types of mask. Always store mask in cool dry place In box when completely dry after rinse.
Its best to clean it once a year or 3 times ayear if ya'll diving every week.....whackla!  ;)

sheik, the plastic frame/rim is removable... once during a dive my mask (same) leaked badly and later discovered this.  U can push and snap it back into place.  So try slowly prise this open first... then, once removed, errr, u let me know k  :D :D

Dey alicuore....if it the silicone gets yellow you can try soak it in water filled shampoo...at least 24 hours but the result okaylah..it gets a bit softer but color not much different.....good luck!  ;)

Tips for clear silicone mask :
Sunlight damages silicone esp. neoprene, so avoid leaving it in direct sunlight. Cover wuth towel or cloth if has to stay in direct sunlight at a boat.Dry your mask throughly before storing in cool dry area away from hydrocarbons & ozone.
