Assuming you are weighted properly for neutral at the end of a dive with around 35 to 50 bar in your tank, 18lbs is actually enough if you dive singles in our tropical waters........ B-)
Anyone can do a dive to 100m or more.....

I don't think there's any course or reliable formula for calculating such lift capacities accurately. Different manufacturers & equipment has got different bouyancy characteristics.(eg. some fins are bouyant while others are negative)

Your best bet is to try out the BCD you want with your setup(if possible) before you invest in it.

For information, I am using a softpac with 18lbs wing from Deepoutdoors with 3mm fullsuit and 6lbs of weights for single tank dives. I have been using this setup for 3 years now.

I know of another diver weighing about 90kgs also using 18lbs wings(DSS system), steel backplate with 0.5mm fullsuit and 4lbs of weights.

Good luck in your quest........  :)

Amongst other things it depends on ur body weight. But then again its very subjective. Need to try out a couple set up before u get comfortable. For me weighing at 83kg the best would be 30lb with SS backplates. I also have 18lb wing of which its still OK but then not that comfortable on surface. Cheers!

To determine the amout of lift required it is subjected to your equiment configuration
I'm a dealer for DSS system, PM me should you required more information on backplate and Wing setup.

hope this was not asked in an earlier thread.

Hi

I use Backplate/Wing for singe tank rig setup..Backplate/Wing also for recreational diving.

I think to get the best answer is stop by at the divestore and ask the them about opinion between backplate/wing vs Bcd..

if u check previous thread, there was a lengthy discussion on this.... i also lazy wanna look up...but u can find it if u try checking out... haha.... it is all about preference bro.... jacket comes wif its own advantages and so does BP and wing setup... and not forgetting both have their disadvantages as well.... we can discuss then argue then go for war till the cows come home, we still can't really get the perfect answer for this...
if BP and wing are just for tech diving, am sure they wouldnt haf come out wif 18lbs or 30 lbs lift...
if u haf the chance to try out BP and wing setup.... do try them out... then do the comparison yourself and compare wif what have been discussed in this forum or any other forum for that matter.....

hehe..agree with sicko.

to me, as long as it keeps my head above water on the surface, i am fine with it. :)

Hi Wahladino, where is your shop located? I understand that DSS has got 17lbs wing. Do you have it in stock?

Hi Sicko,

We have 2 type of 17lbs wings they are as follow:

Torus 17 lbs Full Circle Single Tank Wing
17lbs Tropical Travel Wing

Next in line will be
LCD 20 lbs Single Tank Wing

Let me know any of the above suit your requirement.

Backplate & wings would be a good choice. It will progress with you throughout your diving career and even into Tech diving should you take that path..........

Best part is that it is modular and able to mix & match different components from different manufacturers
