Post Number:#1  Postby dorothy » Thu Dec 13, 2012 3:18 am

Am planning to get my first dive equipments but I've got limited budget so anybody can advice me if theres any good deal or promos going on where i can purchase the reg along with the whole works (1st & 2nd stage), octopus and perhaps the gauges? I saw there are few dive shops having promo packages for the whole reg set but most are above 2k. if can get aqualung flight better.

I think you mean Apeks Flight..?  Ditto wat Run said, no way getting a flight for under 2k with the works ie octo and spg.  For reg sets under 2k you can try scubatex.  Cressi and ODsea can be done for less than 2k for everything

hahaha right right...i tot so why it feels like that i type the word wrong.
Dorothy i am not sure whether you interested to apeks bzoc of the technical side of the regulator performance or just that you know apeks flight is very-very light.
if you are looking for a light reg with strict budget then go for what gavstang said Cressi and use miflex hose with only single mini gauge(showing only the air bar/psi minus the depth gauge).

If you are like me really, really, really have specificly choose one reg and one only , then wait until you budget permits you and buy the reg of your dream.

hi all.. thanks for your replies and yes gavstang.. its apexs flight  ;)
well i thought of apexs flight bcos of frens recommendations and was told that its light indeed. suitable for travelling i guess ! dun really know much in terms of technical unless one of you are willing to share some.

well.. since its slim chance like run said.. i will just have to look look see see till budget permits.

IMHO, the tech side of the regulator will in most cases only enthuse the blokes or the gear heads.  If you are only doing rec diving bearing in mind the rec limit of 40m almost all regs out there are good enough.  THe only difference the higher end regs like Apeks, Aqualung, Scubapro offer will be better breathability at depth. cold weather seals for cold water diving and of course the aesthetic touches.

ASk yourself how often u will dive, if you are only going to dive 1-2 times a year, then u can consider just renting or getting a cheap/budget conscious set.  If you have been HOOKEd, then I pity you cos its just the tip of the iceberg in terms of buying stuff!

hahaha thought so. There are many other regs light enough for travel. Not only apeks. The other may not achieve as light as an apeks but you still can carry it.
As far as i know, lady divers never travel light.
I havent come across a lady diver bringing only 1 handcarry luggage with all her diving equipments + clothes + make up and all.
i can say a diver will bring at least 10kg of diving equipment.

hahhaaa.. run, i have to agree with you at some point about a lady diver travelling lite! we'll its a good start to hv the equipment's lite since we ladies do have other stuffs to consider bringing along.. Lolz

gavstang.. as of now 4 dive trips are in the pipeline for 2013 and one of them is komodo! as a beginner, i would consider myself addicted to it since certification..  am actually looking for bcd and reg. few fellow frens of mine suggested the tusa voyager since i prefer a jacket type compared to the zuma (one of my frens is using it) and apex reg but obviously its on the higher end in $$ and thats were the pinch starts .. lolz

there's like so many things to lookout for according mr. google for one that decides to get a reg or bcd of their own and its so technical at times makes it hard to understand !

Sweet!  Hey think of it this way, if you can afford Komodo you can afford a decent gear set up!

Unless you have a clear idea of wht you are comfy with or want, take your time selecting your gear unless you dont mind buying and then selling a few times!

gavstang.. hehehe! am being sucked into the komodo trip by my buddies .. yeahh it bloody expensive and we're doing a monthly collection for it  :lipsrsealed:

frankly, how would you categorized it as a decent gear set up :)
there's so many brand out there and each time am getting so many mix reviews and feedback aside from my frens giving sugegstions on what to buy or rather what they are using which might just influence me.. hmmmm !! pening ..  [-(

sumtimes i wonder what do i actually have to look out for when selecting these gears..?!

i say spend more on reg and less on BCD. My old buddy told me once u already got control of your bouyancy , the BCD is just to help you safe during down current and on the surface.
So i spend less of my BCD and spend more on my reg.
Voyager is already good enuf. Mine even simpler than yours.

For a lady diver, try to find 2nd stage that small and petite. You look lovelier when your fren take photo of u underwater.
Go for the miflex hose or a rubber hose that is not stiff. You twine in any way , it wont fatigue your jaw.
Apeks 2nd stage is neutrally bouyant. Meaning when you try to do reg recovery method 1, will be a little bit difficult to find your reg since its neutral bouyant.
Might as well you buy yourself a regulator hose around the neck to keep it secure.

here is some light reading for you

IN-WATER TESTING
Regulators were evaluated on the following criteria:

Ease of Breathing.
How well does the regulator deliver air when the diver is propelling himself forward in the swimming position?

Bubble Interference.(not that important with me)
Taking into account that all regulators have bubble interference to a certain degree, when looking down, straight ahead, up at a 45-degree angle and straight up, do the bubbles rise into the diver's field of view at an average rate, less than average or more than average?

Wetness.
During normal swimming and when in odd positions, does the regulator breathe wet or dry?
Ease of Clearing. How difficult is it to find and use the purge? How dry is it after being cleared? How forceful is the purge? How much force is required to clear the regulator by blowing?

Adjustments.
If the regulator has diver-controlled adjustments, how easy are they to find, grip and turn? Do they do their job in a reasonable manner?

Different Positions.
With the diver in a head-down or face-up horizontal position, how is breathing affected? Is it harder or easier? Wetter or drier?

Comfort.
How comfortable is the mouthpiece? Hose length and stiffness? Buoyancy of the second stage? How does the second stage feel in the mouth?

How about try borrowing your frenz reg for a test?

All good suggestions by Run and definitely pertinent to your search for gear.  I agree with him re spending more on reg than bcd.  Ultimately though THE most important piece of gear should be your dive computer without which you wont be able to maximise bottom time and hence maximise the money spent on diving.  Its important but it doesnt mean u need to spend the MOST money on the dive comp.  Just get a good one.  Id recommend a Suunto D4i but if u wanna save money then u can go for the Suunto Zoop.

DOnt rush into buying, keep reading and getting opinions and understanding what it is u want.  Perhaps you can list down what u r looking for in your gear set up and then proceed from there.

dorothy,
like run said....
Different Positions.

some diver don't like the feeling of getting wet in their mouth while head down leg up, yes sometime only u need to be in that position, tips before buying a regulators, try 1st from others divers (it is free) then decide......

please don't end up buying a reg & then sell it bcoz u don't like it......
zuma not bad actually, try it out & feel the different, if u like backpacking, u will like zuma.....

oppssss......salute 1st to the President & Vice President.....

Mares x-flight
One of my fren is using it now and he complain that this bcd's design is quite hard for him to do buoyancy.
Same comments from some instructor from Mabul island.

Tusa/Zuma
Have pocket storage/no pocket storage
jacket type/wing type
2.5kg dry/ less than 2kg dry

The difference between a jacket and wing.
Jacket give performance when surface on the water. It keep the diver upward.
wing give its performance underwater. less drag when finning forward.

The cons-is only when the diver didn't really know how to handle his/her BCD together with his/her bouyancy. Oh and also the BCD not fitted perfectly to the diver's body.

narco.....couldn't agree more......
any reg is a good reg if i can give u air at the surface & underwater......regardless of the brand

dorothy,
don't rush buying reg & bcd, u can wait for MIDE 2013 for a good bargain......
IMHO u should consider aqualung mikron, not bad compare to Apeks Flight
if u have problem with aqualung mikron hose, u can simply replace it with rubber hose or miflex hose while Apeks Flight not that simple, u have to bring along Apeks Flight hose as a back up......

zuma quite comfortable if u know how to handle.......

If you ask me, I would say BCD is the last thing you want to buy. And as for reg, I would recommend you Legend cause I'm using it. :p Just don't rush buying it. In the end, depends on your budget but hygiene come 1st. I don't think you want to share the mouthpiece with others. :)
