Fin-Shopping

Post Number:#1  Postby SSB » Thu Apr 02, 2009 4:46 pm

So.. I'm looking around for a pair of fins.

After reading and reading some more about the different types of fins, I've decided to go for open-heeled paddle fins. But that's only half the battle, there are so many types of paddle fins to choose from.. the more I see, the more confused I get  :laughing11:

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here uses the Seac Propulsion Fins (http://www.bluewatersports.eu/propulsio ... 1453-p.asp) or the Gull Mantis fins (http://www.solutionscuba.com/diving-equ ... n-heel-fin). I'd like to know your thoughts on those fins?

Thanks  :)

Hi Reen,

Thanks for the link to the reviews, I've read it before.. but.. it doesn't have anything on the fins that I've mentioned. Is there some other fin in it which you're recommending I look at?

what makes you prefer to Seac Propulsion Fins and Gull mantis in the 1st place?
Is it the attractive design? or is it the spec?
Are you looking for a full rubber fin or a mix of plastic and rubber?
Are you looking for a fin that helps you to move great while fighting against current or
are you looking for less kicking effort kinda of fins?

If you are referring as a general for open heel and paddle type between seacsub and gull...i go for seac sub..
cause it's design some what a little similiar to Mares Avanti full foot which received good review from it's owner and testers..since this is an open heel so the performance will less a little bit compare to full footed.
Full footed are less heavy and no need booties so it make it more easier for you to paddle your fin..
but without booties..u may walk on dead corals and injured your feet..

Yup, I'm aware of the pros of having booties, hence why I decided to go for open-heeled fins. And I am not looking for 'less kicking effort' fins, hence why I decided not to go for split fins.

I've just been going to different shops looking at their selections of paddle fins, and trying to find reviews on them before I make a final decision on which one to buy. Some I've managed to find reviews on, but I can't find much on Seac Propulsion and Gull Mantis.. that's why I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has anything to say about them.

Ahh.. the famous Force Fins! There was a girl using Force Fins on my last dive trip, she said she loved them  :) but they're really expensive, aren't they? I have to consider my pockets haha since the next thing on my list of things to buy is a dive computer  :P

Force fins or Bio-fins = the same?

My sis just bought GULL brand fins: made in Japan, RM300+ not too bad, eh?

Force fins and bio fins are different. Here are links to pictures:

Bio Fins: http://www.apollosportsusa.com/Products ... in_Pro.htm

Which model Gull fin did your sister get? Let me know what she thinks of them once she's tried them :)

Hey, thanks for the tip Bonk!! I just came back from Tallahesee's clearance sale in kota damansara. Scubapro items.. wanted to get fins but they didn't have my size anymore, so I only got booties. I'll try to go to TCE later today!

any fin is good fin as long as its not too heavy and does not cause you to cramp while finning in strong current. I prefer mares avanti quattro..ever so lightly and good response in kicking. The other one is the oceanic..really light weight..easy of baggage allowance...

i found the scubapro jet a bit on the heavier side...
R U wet yet?

I went to tce yesterday, but it was closed. I won't have time to go back there on weekdays, so I guess I'll miss the sale  :(

Just wondering, which other dive shops in S'gor/KL carry Mares fins? I checked the authorised dealers list on the Mares website, called a couple of them (Dive Station @ Midvalley and Dragonet @ Damansara Utama) but they said that they don't sell Mares fins.

Peter, I saw scubapro jet fins at the clearance sale.. but didn't get those as they'd most likely be too heavy for me.. skinny legs, lol  :P

Have you considered Cressi Reaction? Stiff, great for frog kicks and side finning when hovering above sandy area. Light, less than 1kg per fin. Endorsed by Macha.

http://www.cressi.it/easyStore/SchedeVedi.asp?ProdottiID=331#

Can see at Scuba Dynamics and A&L in Bangsar Village. Macha also sells them, PM him for price.

Thanks for the fin suggestions/offers  :) I just bought a pair of Mares Avanti X3. I can only fit XS fins, so that narrowed down my fin choices by quite a bit haha  :icon_tongue:
