Yes

I have back-up mask in my right pocket every time I dive and my left sides spool, wet notes and etc.

Safe diving

Bonjour superkingkong and Nizaha,

I know its probably good to bring a spare mask, but I don't because it adds unnecessary weight. And I don't bring accessories unless i think i need those during the dive. What i normally do before a diving trip is to check all my equipment for wear and tear, and make sure they are all in good working order. If i have any doubt, i will bring them to the pool to test.

Unless of couse, something unfortunately happens, say you lose a mask when diving, which happens rarely if instructions are followed. But if you do, i think you can probably get a temp replacement at the DC, and then buy a new one when you have returned home.

i do bring a spare mask, mainly because i am already used to my old one, in case my new mask have problem or got lost, at least i have something i am very used to already...and masks dun weight 1kg...so not much weight and space will be taken up..

I always bring a spare mask on a dive trip.

But this is more due to a (as zimm would say) "bum plank crash prek"ing incident when a diver put her tank where she wasnt sposed to on the boat after a dive.

Having said that, I dont normally bring the spare mask down when I dive.

its recommended to bring a spare mask during a dive, the principle of redundancy....but if you dont, make sure the only one you got is FULL ON!, the principle of getting things right the first time......

Hmmmmmm... Spare mask while diving?? Interesting idea. I don't have a spare mask, and I don't intend to lose my mask while diving. Quoting Scorpenesub, losing a mask underwater would be disasterous for a newbie like me, but the idea of getting a spare AFTER the dive feels like being a parachutist - if the parachute doesn't work, get a replacement from the QM when you get down..hehehehe..

Interesting idea, but is there a mask that is not so bulky that you can clip on to your BCD or put in BCD pocket??

Bonjour IkanBilis,

Am sorry, I didnt quite communicate quite as clearly. What I mean is that if I ever lose my mask during a dive, which I hope I won't ever, I will abort dive since I don't have spare mask. Yup, you are right in that parachute context about getting a new chute from the QM....Its SAYONARA....in a box....

Yes, I do see the point in having a spare mask now. Thanks IkanBilis. One lesson learnt.

I carry one spare with me in my thigh pocket ONLY when I do tech diving. Even then I do not intend to lose my primary mask.

If I lose one during a recreational dive, I just ascend safely and surface.

Someone should think about taking spare fins down as well.

Redundancy is not a bad thing, just that it's a hassle. You never know when u'll need it.

eg, insurance.. it's good to have one. It's a "just in case" thing.

it's up to u to judge... how important is that dive. do u want to waste your dive (abort the dive) if suddenly u lose ur mask? mask is not expensive item.. i guess most ppl can afford one... further more, it's just a backup mask, u can get a el-cheapo one.

since i can afford a backup mask, and i can't afford to abort my dive or waste my dive, i'll carry one :)

in rec diving, a spare mask is not really necessary coz u can still work your way out wif limited visibility..... if u loose your mask...abort dive...ascend slowly and do your safety stop.... u'll hafto gauge your depth by looking at the surface or whatever method la....or use your creativity to create a small air pocket to look at DC or depth gauge...haha.... just count to 180 or 200 for 3 minutes...

it is critical to haf spare mask on tech dives coz u'll need to check your dive plan.... time...depth....deco stop...etc etc.... am not a tekkie, so for the time being, my spare mask stays in my dive beg when i go diving....

i never bring down a spare mask before, but looking the posts, why not.. to playsafe maa.. like SKK said, if something happen to the mask on our face, probably someone kick u on your face.. and ur mask break or get unstrapped from u and lose it.. or maybe leaking or maybe strap breaks.. atleast, with the spare mask, just put it on, and can start search on our own.. eventhough u think its broken, still who knows..can be repair wan..and who knows, its your favorite mask..like me, my favorite all time is the scubapro frameless..still i have another one mares purevision that currently always stay in my mesh bag.. hehehee..

Hmm..looks like you knew your answer before you started this topic.

So why did you ask in the first place? Maybe you should just start a poll and see how may actually carry extra stuff and redundant systems on a recreational dive.

IMHO:
1) Recreational Dive (no deco)  - in addition to DC, depth gauge and watch.
2) Dives where surfacing is not an immediate option - in addition to 1, stage bottle, table - base case and what ifs, and will consider spare mask.

Mask is pretty down the line for me....as long as you can read your DC/table without a mask!
