Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Post Number:#1  Postby nanda666 » Mon Sep 12, 2011 11:51 am

The weather around Perth is starting to warm up so looks like you guys are gonna hear more from me!!!  :icon_tongue:

Rottnest island is just 18km offshore Perth with crystal clear waters!! Drove to Fremantle (After breakfast at home! ;) ) and boarded the Perth Dving Academy's MV Lionfish at 8 30am. A decent size diveboat with dining area, 3 toilets and a sundeck. Journey out to rottnest is 45mins.

Weather was bright and sunny but water temp still 18 Deg C....Brrrrr!!
Cost of 2 dives with lunch was AUD$140.

I did 2 dives and was back home by 3pm!!! :) :)

The dives are pretty simple with max depth around 20m. Not as much fish as back home but still loads to see. Lots of nudis, and many reef fish that we don't see in Malaysia. The reef is covered with a form of Kelp/weeds which sway in the surge...looks pretty cool!!

I was equiped with my new Scubapro 5mm wetsuit (AUD $300 on sale!!! :P ) and my canon G12.

Below are some shots

Some nudis!!

Photos aren't really that good as the viz is not great. My buoyancy control with the new wetsuit and 4kg of weights was not that great either....hopefully better shots will follow soon.  :) :) :)

Cost of flights from Perth to Exmouth is same as cost of flights to Bali!! [-( [-(

I think Komodo and Raja Ampat trips will come before Ningaloo.....unless I'm heading offshore for work!! (Then company "bayar" the flights!!! hehehe!! ;) ;)  I'll just take my mask & wetsuit along....)

Rottnest definitely does not have the variety of our tropical waters but the fact that I can leave after Breakfast, get 2 dives, some nice photos and be home for tea is difficult to beat. (I use to drive 7 hours to Kuala Besut or 4 hours to Mersing!! :( :( )

Plan is to head up to Lancelin to dive of the sunken jack-up rig, Key Biscayne......will have my strobe hooked up to the G12 by then so expect better photos!!! hehehe!! :D :D

A few better shots from my dive buddy Ray...also with a G12

So as you can see......the little island 18km offshore Perth does have some pretty decent photo opportunities. (A lot like our Tengku Abdul Rahman Park (TARP) in Kota Kinabalu(KK).....welcome to the world of CITY DIVING!!! :D :D
