I am back in wifi action! Continuing with the report...  ;)

SEAFAN HEAVEN
SATURDAY – 29 November 2008

Dive site: Equator Island, Kawe
Surface interval:  3 hours
Time in: 1100hrs
EAN: 33-34
Bottom time: 60mins
Average depth: 17.3m
Maximum depth: 29m
Water temperature: 30 degrees
Surface condition: Calm
Diving condition: Just nice
Visibility: 30++m (wonderful!!)

It’s called the Equator Island for one obvious reason – the Equator belt runs right across it. The site is blessed with awesome coral diversity and the soft corals are EXCEPTIONAL. There was excellent visibility when we went in…

Spotted lots of cowries (Hiata brunneiterma) on gorgonians as well as the Chromodoris boucheti and C. annae. Din’s good eyes found hingebacks hiding behind anemone and also orang utan crabs and glass shrimps.  She also found a cute Morrison’s or starry dragonet.

Dave (who is ecstatic about all things huge) pointed out this ONE ANCIENT GIGANTIC of a turtle. It looked like a dinosaur or a lost creature of the deep blue or something!!  We couldn’t even identify it as we couldn’t see any distinctive features so we settled for Green turtle.

And then the usual suspects – batfish and surgeons, pyramid butterflies, 3-spot/bi-coloured/6-banded/emperor angelfish…

A nice and easy dive with the small and the gigantic.. such bliss    :)

ON A LEASH (AND NOT SMILING)
SATURDAY – 29 November 2008

Dive site: Doggie Rock, Wayag Islands
Surface interval: 3:37 hours
Time in: 1535hrs
EAN: 33-34
Bottom time: 40mins
Average depth: 16.1m
Maximum depth: 29.5m
Water temperature: 29 degrees
Surface condition: Undulating
Diving condition: What the %^&*
Visibility: 20+m

When I was down there, hooked to a reef with the upswell just under a knot strong going straight at my face, I asked myself “WHY!!!”….

Dave had mentioned 'hard core’, 'raging current’, and 'merciless surges’ that could smash us against the overhang of the islet… But we all wanted some fish action. Insane...  :D :D

A few moments of heavy breathing to calm my hyperventilating heart, I looked behind to see that my devoted buddy Spazm wasn’t close by. I was temporarily horrified cos I kinda figured (or more like hoped in hell) that he’d be fine!! At that point in time I felt like I needed to focus on my own finning and breathing. I later found out that he couldn’t proceed forward with camera and all. The currents were raging! My head was already pounding and i wasn't smiling.

We saw some fish alright. Thank goodness cos I remember only seeing the face of the reef most of the time, having had to hang on to my dear life.  [-(

Dog-tooth tuna, blue-fin and giant trevallies, hawksbill turtle, lots of red-tooth triggers, bumphead parrotfish, fat lobsters and the odd nudi Nembrotha kubaryana.

GCG saw an epaulette shark on this dive!!

IN THE DARK WITH THE WALKING SHARKS
SATURDAY – 29 November 2008

Dive site: Guitar Island, Wayag Islands
Surface interval: 2:37 hours
Time in: 1852hrs
EAN: 33-34
Bottom time: 61mins
Average depth: 6.4m
Maximum depth: 11.2m
Water temperature: 29 degrees
Surface condition: Calm
Diving condition: Just nice

Fourth dive for the day (we sometimes wonder where we got all that energy!).

I began this dive with a mission – to see the raja epaulette shark. And the site blessed us with SEVEN of them, though i am sure there were more! Their long slender shiny rubbery bodies stayed so still – perhaps blinded by the light? One actually ‘walked’… Imagine how a lizard moves, that’s kind of how it looked like…

We also saw a Giant Moray, yellow-headed moray, lobsters, 2 huge sleeping blue-barred and red-lipped parrotfish, a smalltooth emperor in mottled phase (or so it says in the book)… A black-silvery Ovula ovum on hard coral and a yellow-mask angelfish with an epaulette shark nearby.

It was so peaceful... we took our own sweet time - 61 mins to be exact. Very quickly my stomach started grumbling – so so hungry and ready for some yummy-licious food…

After dinner, we were all lulled by the sea breeze and then rocked into deep slumber by Shakti.

So good, we did Guitar Island over and over again...  :) :)

GUITAR SERENADING IN THE DAY
SUNDAY – 30 November 2008

Dive site: Guitar Island, Wayag Islands
Surface interval:  12:15 hours
Time in: 0808hrs
EAN: 33-34
Bottom time: 62mins
Average depth: 15.2m
Maximum depth: 26.2m
Water temperature: 29 degrees
Surface condition: Calm
Diving condition: Just nice
Visibility: 30m (yee-hah!)

This dive was supposed to be Doggie Rock (with the currents going in the opposite direction) but the thought of being stuck in a crescent bay with a slinky ‘vortex of doom’ in the horizon basically telling you that you are ‘f@^k&%, we whined enough for the DMs to take us back to calm and cosy Guitar Island.

Big nudi (almost palm-sized) Notodoris minor, so motionless and rigid… playing dead perhaps?? More nudibranchs like the Notodoris gardinieri and Glossodoris atromarginata

Ornate, pyramid and long-nose butterflies; pennant and humphead banners; blackspotted puffer and a really cute spotted boxfish (blue & yellow with deep-set ‘eyebrows’), heheheh.

A huge brown and alert Papuan scorpionfish. Then there was this moray, either a fimbriated or reticulated, hiding but I could see it had a blue head and yellow nostrils. Was trying to coax it out so that GCG could have a shot of it…

And to end the lovely dive, a Morrison’s dragonet and a golden spadefish.

*Bunyi gitar…. Irama twist*

CAUGHT IN A SLINKY
SUNDAY – 30 November 2008

Dive site: The Overhang, near Doggie Rock
Surface interval:  1:56 hours
Time in: 1107hrs
EAN: 33-34
Bottom time: 52mins
Average depth: 16.1m
Maximum depth: 25.2m
Water temperature: 30 degrees
Surface condition: Calm
Diving condition: Just nice

Again this dive was supposed to be Doggie Rock (personally, I think these guys are adrenaline junkies), but when we got to the islet, the currents go way too strong for our liking. So Dave signalled for us to go to The Overhang.

The Overhang managed to offer us a slinky and I briefly saw Snafu expertly navigating himself out of one as it came through the valley…

It was wall diving all the way!

Hingeback shrimps, Picasso triggers and small red-tooth triggers everywhere! A nicely sized barramundi cod and a school of fusiliers ever mesmerising with their iridescent blue streaks…

The common black-yellow-orange flatworm, Nembrotha cristata, Notodoris minor, N. gardineri, Phyllidia pustulosa, and a small Tritonia spp. about 1cm long, moving over a hard coral.

ENJOYING WAYAG ISLANDS…

Image  Image
Photo credit: Diana Himmelspach, PT Tribaldiving.

After two dives that Sunday morning, Dave recommended that we do a boat tour to appreciate the top-side wonders of Wayag Islands. There couldn’t have been a better recommendation!!

We had a picnic lunch under shady trees, occasionally dipping and swimming in crystal clear aqua marine water to cool. It was shallow for a long way so we could practice our Bond girl walk (haha, in my case I failed miserably) and GCG could practise his epaulette shark walk..  :D

Put us together and you get the Espresso, Mocha and Latte, the photo of which seen earlier posted by Rocket   :)

Ravi and Blackbear were chilling out with the crew and showering Shanti-girl with attention, getting her insanely excited! This is one lucky dog, I tell you. She gave us perfect form when Dave tossed her in the air for a splash  :angel8:

After lunch, we had a snooze on Shakti (what a life!!) and then when the sun wasn’t blazing, we set out to explore some of the cute and some of the majestic limestone outcrop.

Where it got too shallow, we hopped out of the dinghy and walked close to the mangrove areas. The sand was soft beneath our feet, nice calm warm water broken only by wee islets growing shrubs, palms and wild orchids.

Din told us it’s a nursery for turtles, rays and sharks… We did manage to see a few baby rays and black-tip sharks.

A perfect lazy Sunday, wouldn’t you agree?

If I recall correctly, there was a night dive after, which I gave a miss. It was Guitar Island again… we couldn’t get enough out of that one, hehe.

In continuing with this report and to end it with the last 3 dives of the trip, en route back to Sorong...

HERE’S SHOWING YOU THE FINGER(S)!
MONDAY  – 1 December 2008

Dive site: Devil’s Fingers, Balabalak
Surface interval:  21:43 hours
Time in: 0942hrs
EAN: 33-34
Bottom time: 63mins
Average depth: 14.6m
Maximum depth: 21.6m
Water temperature: 29 degrees
Surface condition: Calm
Diving condition: Just nice
Visibility: 20+m

December 1st was our last day of diving and we were already slowly en route back to Sorong… oh that sounded so depressing.

Lots to see (naturally) - Glittering pipefish (or Messmate or Schultz??) and ringed pipefish… sea tiger nudis Roboastra tigris mating… a biggie tassled wobbegong and 6 adult lobsters in a crevice + another 2 nearby… Wow!  :icon_thumright:

2 sleeping epaulette sharks (with only their tails giving away their hideaway)… a tassled or smallscale scorpionfish which Dave almost accidentally put his hand on thinking it was a big piece of rubble.  :P

2 hawksbill turtles, Spanish mackerel, lionfishes, orang utan crab, sweetlips, clown triggers, black-spotted puffers and blotched porcupinefish.

Slight current at the end of the dive gave it a perfect perfect perfect ending... :)

HAD IT ALL!!
MONDAY  – 1 December 2008

Dive site: Eagle Rocks (West), South Kawe.
Surface interval:  2:49 hours
Time in: 1336hrs
EAN: 33-34
Bottom time: 53mins
Average depth: 15.5m
Maximum depth: 30.4m
Water temperature: 29 degrees
Surface condition: Undulating
Diving condition: Woo-hoo!!!
Visibility: 20+m

This dive is plain wicked!! The site showed us all it's got! Tassled wobbegong, epaulette sharks (upon spotting them, Din and I did a little dance underwater  :D ), gigantic napolean wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, 4 huge mutant sweetlips and 'balls' of oriental sweetlips, blue-streaked fusiliers, surgeonfish and...

... 4 CRUISING GIANT MANTAS!!!!   :icon_thumright:  They were shallow at about 11-12m.

Also saw the sea tiger nudis, anemone shrimps, a pygmy seahorse. Scorpionfish, lionfish, and giant moray...

Dave and Diana were elated!!!  :smileinbox:

Slight current here and there, but manageable... well anything after Doggie Rock is fine by us!!!  :D :D :D

Last dive for the trip...

WITH THE BIG GUYS…
MONDAY  – 1 December 2008

Dive site: Eagle Rocks (East), South Kawe.
Surface interval:  2:04 hours
Time in: 1633hrs
EAN: 33-34
Bottom time: 60mins
Average depth: 13.7m
Maximum depth: 22.8m
Water temperature: 29 degrees
Surface condition: Calm
Diving condition: Woo-hoo!!!
Visibility: 25+m

Current was a perpetual for this one.. but it brought out the fish!

The best part was at the end of the dive when it was only Dave, Din and myself ar 3-6m safety stopping with schools of humongous bumphead parrotfish, sweetlips, surgeons, fusilers and snappers... all within the same safety stop area!!!

There were also giant moray, barramundi cod, orang utan crab... but the stars of the dive were these MATING BLUE-RING OCTOPUS :blob10:

The smaller brown-coloured male looked like he was swallowing the head of the larger female!!! WICKED!!!!

It was indeed the big finale for this trip!!

Alas... in closing this report, I would like to express my (love and) gratitude to our friends:-

Snafuette – for being such an efficient organiser  :icon_thumright:

Snafu – dinners, lessons on diving (technical or otherwise), and being a great supporter to the organiser (muahahaha)  :D

Spazm – for being so patient with all the stares he got both above and underwater. You made the trip very special (for me la, and maybe Rocket as well, haha).

GCG - for his loving and caring free medical consultation while on board with us  :)...

Craig – you ‘orang putih jahat’, we await the trip video… so thank you in advance.

To everyone who made the trip special by celebrating their birthday (Triggerfish), 200th dives (Trigger and Snafuette), and life itself with everyone on board.

For not just sharing coffees, cigarettes and sunblock, but also personal stories (sometimes of hardship)…

For looking out for each other in and out of water and ensuring that at the end of it all, we made it back to the boat (and back home to our loved ones) safe and sound.

To Rocket, Nazir, Holemaster, GCG, Spazm, Trigger, Craig and Snafu for documenting this marvellous trip we all made. Your beautiful pictures have given me much motivation and inspiration to do this report.

To Blackbear for his loud and ever-cheerful “good mornings”…

To Din and Dave and Robert - for being such Raja Ampat experts, ensuring our safety, and giving us a great time!!

To the crew of Shakti – such soul food, clean nitrox, and manning the boat.

To Shanti, the soul of Shakti – great guardian!

We’ll be back!!!!
