Koh Lipe Report (17/2/07 to 19/2/07)

Post Number:#1  Postby HoleMaster » Tue Feb 20, 2007 10:20 pm

Dont shoot as im not really good in articulating stories like Seademon. Btw here goes:

This is my second outing to Koh Lipe including Hollowman. We managed to barely book a place at Varin Resort last minute as most of the resorts were full house due to Chinese New Year weekend.

Myself, babynemo and mnim821 took a flight from KL to Langkawi on Friday 16th nite and met up with Hollowman and misdd. Next morning all of us took the “Flying Fish” speed boat from Telaga Harbour to Lipe. The boat ride were so pricey (RM228 per pax (return), but since it only took us 1 hour to Koh Lipe, we were not complaining. Last year with Seademon and Putradiver group, it took us almost 5 hours from Pakbara to Lipe!

Upon arrival I was quite surprised of how fast development took place after 1 year. There’s a new resort besides Varin called Bundhaya, apparently it is partly owned by our Dato Azhar Mansor. Also to my surprise, even Varin renovated its lounge and coffee house to meet demands and competition. There were heaps of Europeans flocking the beach and at first I thought I was in Phuket. Because a year ago, the island was quite and there's only a handful of tourist. I guess news has spread around about Lipe and with easy access from Langkawi, more and more people starts coming in.

We were greeted by Dave (Instructor and Owner) and Noi from Ocean Pro Divers and after our passport clearance, we headed straight to MV Chalalai (including our luggage) as we wouldn’t wanna miss the dives for the day.

Our dive itinerary are as follows:
First Day:
Dive no .1
Dive site: Koh Yang
Water condition: Greenish (similar like Payar), cold and thermocline everywhere
Visibility: 10 m
ABT: 64 min
Max Depth: 24 m
Comments:
Saw a crab (dunno actual name) and different types of flutemouths which include trumpetfish and cornetfish

Dive no .2
Dive site: Koh Lancha
Water condition: Blue (not green like Koh Yang). Funny that from one dive site to another water colour changes. :o
Visibility: 15 m
ABT: 62 min
Max Depth: 18.9 m
Comments:
Again saw cornetfish, giant moray, stonefish and towards end of dive spotted a school of jacks and yellow tail barracuda’s. :)

Second Day:
Dive no .3
Dive site: Adang Corner (the “Autobahn”)
Visibility: 5 m
Max Depth: 18.2 m
ABT: 55 min
Comments:
Myself, Hollowman and mnim821 descended together with Dave’s group but got separated at bottom due to bad vis. Three of us manage to group up again and waited for Dave’s group to show up. They didnt turn up after a few minutes and we decided to go on our own. The current was like 3-4 knots and we drifted like superman, spriderman…u name it. Even Mat Rempit couldn’t do that, i mean drifting backwards, forwards, sideways and etc. When we surfaced, we were surprised to see all the divers were on the boat lepaking. I told Dave that I didn’t see any other divers down there and how come u guys manage to surface early? He said a number of divers panicked and couldn’t control under strong current. Therefore he told all of them to abort for safety reasons. My advice, only experienced divers can take the Autobahn challenge.

Dive no .4
Dive site: Koh Yang (West)
Water condition: Cold and thermocline everywhere
Visibility: 15 m
ABT: 63 min
Max Depth: 17.6 m
Comments:
Vis was bad initially but were great towards end of dive. Saw lion fish, nudi’s and again cornetfish

Other comments:
Great seafood, good company and great dives although we only did 4 compared to 7 last year (btw last year we had additional day). Ocean Pro Divers charged us THB1,100 per dive (including lunch) with own equipment. Slightly more expensive than last year. Probably year before we had big group and therefore cheaper or probably because people know about Lipe now they start jacking up the price :-? Per person including dives, transporatation (speed boat and flight) and food for 3 days 2 dives sums up to RM1,500. Not too bad for people who deprives compressed air during monsoon and would want to try out international waters.....

Pics would be uploaded by Hollowman and mnim821 later

One more thing...yeah, I think Bundhaya is partly-owned by Azhar Mansor because the project manger for the construction of that resort's a company based in KL and Penang. As you would know by now, Azhar Mansor runs Telaga Harbour, the speedboats to Lipe, and the company that builds those speedboats.
