Diving in December

Post Number:#1  Postby TWR_Jaguar » Sat Apr 21, 2012 12:10 am

Hi all,

I'll be going to Malaysia in December to visit family again. Fortunately, I've got some extra holiday so me and a friend are looking at doing an open water course. Could anyone make some recommendations as to places which will still be operating, as I understand that its monsoon season in places.

Many Thanks
Darcy

Tioman, there's some operators still running.

Sabah is all-year round so, try KK or better yet, the east coast of Sabah - Semporna, Mabul, Tun Sankaran, that area.

Happy diving !

Thanks for the advice. Been to KK with family before, so wouldn't mind going somewhere new. Been nice to chill away from the family before heading to the kampung. Koh Lipe looks quite appetizing.

Koh Lipe diving season start from Nov to early May
a very nice place start diving, a lot of beautiful soft coral and school of fish as well.
a place full of mat saleh from europe + local thai, the food also nice
u can travel to Koh Lipe by speed boat from Langkawi or Pak Barra Jetty in Langgu Thailand
i can recommend forra diving (forradiving.com) coz i dive with them before (big boat), or u can dive with ocean pro divers (oceanprodivers.net) (big boat) or adang sea divers (adangseadivers.com) (speed boat)  B-)

Your best bet is Koh Lipe. One hour boat ride west of Langkawi.

There is diving at Payar (Langkawi) and Sembilan (Pangkor). But those pale in comparison to diving on the East Coast. At least at Koh Lipe, you'll definitely get a good experience. Coral life is good there.

1. Book the dive trip at the dive centre by email. Koh Lipe is packed by December.

2. And you MUST insist on a GUARANTEE that you'll get the most experienced dive master at the DC. And you must ask his name and his years at Koh Lipe. They may say "Oh, this DM has many years experience." Who cares. It's the experience on Koh Lipe that counts.

Otherwise for sure they will give you the FOB idiot (fresh off the boat) DM. Very hard to find DC with local DMs in Thailand. They always rely on freshie gwailo DMs. The worst kind of DM. Always talk crap and cannot spot anything.

tim,
last time when u were at Koh Lipe, which DC u bump into?..... :D
i was with forra diving, (3 of us) they assigned lady DM from greece (2 years experience in Koh Lipe) & trainee DM from Argentina to assist/guide us, & they are very good in spotting small stuff like nudibranch, diving was cha cha......relax.......
