Tenggol Dive Report [10/3/2012-11/3/2012]

Post Number:#1  Postby toodus » Thu Mar 15, 2012 5:39 pm

Same stunt I pulled from 2 weeks ago. Left work at 7pm, picked up two divers from Segambut at 2am and off we went to Kuala Dungun jetty. We reached Kuala Dungun jetty at 6am. Our boat would only pick us up at 830am. But instead of 7 hours of driving to Perhentian, I only drove 5 hours.

KL - Karak = 1 hour
Karak - Jabor = 1  hour
Jabor - Kemaman = 2 hours
Kemaman - Kuala Dungun - 1 hour

5 hours !!!5 hours is so doable.

Anyway, back to my report. I communicated with Zol and I have to thank run from this forum who provided me with his cell number. I called Zol and we went to email communications.I love Zol. He replies my emails very quickly and that's the way to my heart. Anyone who replies the fastest gets my business. PLain and simple. After a few thorough emails exchanged, I banked in the amount for my 2 days 1 night dive with him.

Our boat left at 845am and headed to the island. The boat ride took us 40 minutes and that is 10 minutes longer than Perhentian. The ferry to Tioman is like Kryptonite to me. Anyway, we anchored at a cove , a beautiful crescent shaped cove with Zol's dive centre and resort on the right hand side. There are two other resorts but since they were not interested in doing the 2d 1n thing, hence I have zero interest in them.

Zol's dive centre is amazing. Everything is labelled. There are tubs of fresh water to soak just about every dive gear possible....even a baldi for your dive computer. Organized !!! And there is a spot to hang your BCD according to your number with a basket provided. Excellent. It wasn't terabur. The compressor is just next to the dive centre and it'll only take 5 steps to get your tank and bring it back to your staging area. Very convinient.  My 5 tanks all registered 200 psi on the gauge. Also, I am impressed with their high pressured shower at the dive centre. Nothing like a proper powerful cool shower to rinse away the seawater. I love the showers
Image

Above the hill is the hangout area with chairs and tables which overlooks the cove. Newly issued 2012 dive magazines are available. However, there's no Internet access there and electricity is supplied from 630pm until 830am.

Zol's accomodation is very basic. 2 single beds and a bunk bed in a room. I don't know about the other rooms but these were the layout of my room. There's an attached shower and toilet and again, I am very impressed with the high pressure water coming out from the shower head. I showered with joy.

Their restaurant is buffet style only. The food was yummy. Malay style kind of food. I love it as well.

Dive 1 :
Gua Rajawali.Boat ride was a mere 2 minutes. The mountain landscape is stunning. The island from this point of view looked like King Kong lived there. Very wild and unexplored. This dive site is famous for her nudibranchs. ALL SORTS OF NUDIBRANCHES! My first descend, nampak one Roboastra Gracilis on the wall. 2 seconds later, a Miller’s nembrotha, 10 seconds later, a hypselodoris bullocki..... I went mad. And the underwater landscape is also amazing. Blocks of squarish rocks littered the dive site. I ended up with 20 bars left. If I get kanchiong or excited, my air intake increases. Viz was superb.

Dive 2 :
Rajawali Reef
Slightly in front of Gua Rajawali. This is the site where a family of whale sharks and mantas hung around for 3 months a few years back which created a frenzy. Remember that? This dive site is phenomenal. You can see Giant Trevallies here and large schools of Yellow Tailed Snappers like the ones in Perhentian’s Tokong Laut or Tanjung Basi. Landscape underwater is equally wild. Huge boulders and wall and sometimes, these walls have caves. Not like Sipadan’s Turtle Tomb but shallow caves. Good enough to get your adventure adrenalin running. Saw several big queen angelfishes in the cave. A couple of giant morays live in the cracks of these boulders as well. Did not really look for nudis as two other divers seem to be going their own way and I had to look out for them. Oh yes, no current. Viz was superb

Chromodoris Kuneie..... Above is Chromodoris Coi

Dive 3 :
Tg Gemuk
Drift dive. The uw landscape is not as exciting as the first two but the nudis were out of this world. I took at least 10 minutes to photograph a Chromodoris Lineonata who decided to crawl into a clam and out again and in again, etc. 20 bars as well at the end of this dive. Viz was not as good as the other 2 dive sites.

Dive 4
Night Dive
Night dives are superb. No current. I saw a big Napoleon Wrasse in a cave, catfish, a pufferfish having his mouth cleaned by a shrimp, fimbriated moray eel, white eyed moray eel, schools of fishes swimming really fast for whatsoever reason, scorpion fish, a smiling parrotfish(my fav pic) and loads of shrimps.

Dive 5
Moonraker at Nyireh Island
The boat ride from Tenggol Is to Nyireh Is took about 15 minutes. This dive site, I saw some really weird nudibranches. I think different nudi species mated and out came a hybrid nudi. At times, there are three different nudis on a rock and taking uw photos of them can be quite stressful. They’re smaller than a grain of rice. Sometimes, they’re at an angle where you’d have to be a Cirque De Soleil contortionist to take their pictures. From funny position, cramps will set in and your breathing is heavier and I’m checking my bottom time and I want to emphasis how small the nudi is by putting my pointer next to the nudi, etc.....Risk life and limb for you guys man.
The viz was bearable as it rained when we backrolled.

Have to share air during safety stop.....

That’s it. Took the 1130am boat out, drove to Kemaman for stuffed crab and Hai Peng coffee and was back in KL at 630pm. Beautiful.
At Hai Peng, I saw the future mother of my unborn children

Anyway, Tenggol had me at Nudibranch.

Narco...i brainwash toodus to head for tenggol  ;)

hehehe zol..got to hand it to that man. He offered a good service and he tried to improve his ways. Of course not to forget the tenggol incident 14hours in the sea though that never stop enthusiastic divers from discovering tenggol.

Hope the turtles still lay their eggs at that big tree in front of the resort.

Just be alert divers ..those area tokong's especially near the highway, try to do negative entry the surface currents
can be strong

Zaff bro, negative entry is when u enter the water with a completely deflated bcd and went in straight down. This is used when u are diving at sites where the current is strong. Bacisally to avoid u from being drifted/swept away too far by current upon decend. I think it was made famous those doing deep dives.

..does current occurs on the surface there only ?( on the highway site). How deep you would  you descent to expect a 'calm' column of water .? By the way, there is a Chinese bald guy running a dive centre there . Is he still operating there.?
