Dive Report - 24/2/2012-26/2/2012

Post Number:#1  Postby toodus » Tue Feb 28, 2012 6:20 pm

As I do not plan to take leave for my diving trips this year, I had to do the unthinkable and that is to drive from KL to Besut - a horrendous 7 hour drive in the middle of the night and also, in the middle of the rainforest. There are 4 routes to Besut from KL and after calculating all of them, the shortest path is still 6 hours [KL-Lipis-Gua Musang-Besut]

Anyway, my meeting finished at 730pm in downtown KL on Friday. I rushed home to try to take a 2 hour nap but these kind of ambitious plans never materializes. By the time, I threw in the towel, it was 930pm and I was awake at 5am since that morning. Dive bag was packed since yesterday and chucked it at the back of my Ford Ranger.  En route to my destination, I stopped at Gombak to pick up a friend who wanted to follow.
Thank God for this friend because I would have turned back at Karak Highway. The sheer thought of driving for 7 hours made me want to break my balls. It is unfathomable. Luckily, this friend turned out to be a good conversationlist and we had a fun time driving until the break of dawn.

We arrived Besut at approximately 730am, just in time for some Kelantanese Delights...the original Kelantan Delights, not the fancy smancy restaurant at KLCC/KL Sentral where a nasi tumpang will set you back RM20.00. Here, a nasi tumpang is only a mere RM2.00.
Nasi Dagang, Nasi Lauk and Nasi Kerabu - wolfed down in just a few minutes.

The first boat came at 830am and by the time, we reached the dive centre,  it was 9am. That's what I like about Perhentian - 30 minute boat ride as opposed to the 2 hour ferry to Tioman and 4 hour diesel boat to Dayang. Geared up quickly and off we went to Tokong Laut. Weather was superb. Ahhhh Tokong Laut and her rocky landscape. Heart. No currents, nurse sharks hiding under rocks, morays, the group of yellow tailed snappers, etc. Perfect.

Next dive was at Tanjung Basi. Tanjung Basi is Tanjung Basi but this time, I saw a small eagle ray. Managed to video it as well. The last dive of the day was at D Lagoon. Easy dive. Max was 12.5m. Mr Jenkin's Ray is still under the rock. Saw a small devil scorpion fish.

The next morning, we headed to Terumbu Tiga. Heart as well. Who doesn't love the swim throughs at T3? Rock formations jutting out from the seabed to at least 8metres high. We have been diving for the past 50 minutes and waiting to begin my 3 minute safety stop when I found a small nudi. I never find nudis that small and I reckon it was from my macro hunting skills I honed from Pom Pom Island.
What a moment!! I started photographing while the others were already climbing onto the boat. Satisfied with my shots, I checked my gauge. Gaspppppp !!

4 glorious dives. Just what I needed. Took the afternoon boat back to Besut, got into my truck, bought bags of keropok lekor, used the coastal road, stopped by at Tong Juan in Kemaman for some stuffed crab and reached home at 1030pm on a Sunday night.

The drive took 15 hours all together but was it all worth it ? YES if you have the right company with you....
