The disaster of Redang Marine Park

Post Number:#1  Postby oldturtle » Fri Dec 30, 2011 10:34 pm

What really happens at Redang Marine Park.?  Broken corals (dead) all under the Jetty . Hope someone could share some opinion here .!! To be fair on this topic which I started , my personal opinion is :I blame it on the local Govt. . eg.. why the needs to build more concrete structure on the tiny beach :glasses9: ? To helps  the local folks ? Very shallow strategy indeed............

Snorkelers ? the caused . I dont think so....no.1 .not many can touch the coral while donning their life jacket ,No.2 : urine ...nah....!
or the hiring of incompetent marine park officer ..(not surprising at all...boleh land..mah...)

definitely snorkellers cause when low tide, the depth is only 1 meter from the surface of water to the corals.

Lack of education to the general public as well. They just bring tourist to their snorkeling spot and ask everyone to jump without prior educating the public the important of our corals. I saw a lot of snorkelers standing on corals and some even took some coral as souvinir home.

i dont think lack of education. The public some of them are deaf to announcement. Dont matter how many
times you explain to them, they are still stubborn.
Me and my frenz ecounter some of the snorkeler who have been told not to step on the corals or take anything
from the site but they ignore it so no choice but scream at them.

did u know, during the construction of redang laguna, it killed almost all the corals on that side of the beach..

initially other dive resort scowl at them.. then later on they all did the same.. renovate to make it similar to laguna.. then habis.. all corals.. DEAD.

i had the luxury to snorkel in redang before laguna was built (that time i not yet diver, first time snorkeler and fell in love with the sea that time).. the corals were beautiful..

My last visit to Redang was May last year. My second visit actually after my certification. I must say, it is sad to see the dead corals and the lost on marine life. During my prior visit, plenty of marine life to be seen although it was just a house reef dive. Unfortunately last year, it does seems to me that it is declining. I just cant wait to end the dive.

What can we, as members of MUW do to help in a serious way?

seriously? most effective way is to have no resorts on the island, which will be impossible. another  feasible way would be to have all DM and inst to dive around with a long stick (to make sure all divers stay a good distance from the coral)  ;)

For a start just ban all two stroke engines in the marine park area, very strict control on all forms of wastes from being dumped into the sea without proper treatment, very strict control on fishing activities in the marine park area without exception.....

folks, all over the world, the problem is the same-----ppl just like you and me.

i am sure you guys have been in a dive group and some of the other divers dont give a s _ _t about the place? prying animals from their hiding place just to take a picture? touching the animals??

the moment ppl adv that this place is nice, that place is nice, operators will build boats to get to chalets that they will build to house us. build jetties so we dont get wet...build sewage treatment (i hope they build) to treat Indah water??( what a name)

then others want to do same biz, multiply that by 16 resorts, this is what happens!

who will volunteer to be police? swim all day to check that they will not step on the corals? TUDM? i saw right in front of me..a couple stepping on the coral to kiss, i told them to get a room...they told me to ?!%# off...

the word is political will! and we know there is not much of that going around in Malaysia!!

so my frens, what-to-do lah? as my ang moh frens tell me. ppl who are making money at Redang dont want to anger their guests. ppl who spend big money at Redang dont give a hoot to the killing of the corals?

and we? we who care are powerless to do anything. just watch them die and talk about the good old days when there were corals.

i am sad because my wife and i took our OWC at Pulau Redang and just helpless at this slow death the eco system is going thru.

...maintaining and protecting the corals ,i would think the responsibility  , still lies on the marine park 'dept' and politician representing Redang.

at least at a Zoo, we can keep the ppl away with a fence, this one a bit difficult. when i was there, this big resort had 6 boats with 20 ppl on each boat and dumped all of us at the marine park!!!

banana peel, plastic, diaper, sunscreen lotion, you name it lah, it ended up at the marine park.

at Donsol, Philippines. they limit the no. of snorkelers for the whaleshark interaction. max 6 to a boat. and they tell the boatmen how they should approach the creature and a max time of 2 hours a day.

i dont know how we are going to enforce this but i think its a good idea.
