Mabul (Sipadan) diving and accomodation

Post Number:#1  Postby kamoe » Mon Apr 25, 2011 9:15 pm

Hi, I'm considering doing some diving on Mabul (Sipadan) for a while.

But need a decent internet access the the place I'll live to do some work while I stay there.

Have anyone here experiences with internet access at the hotels/huts on the island? I need it to be in-room.

Thanks for any thips!

Yep.. dunno whether the whole Mabul island or not. I had just got back from Mabul, 3G it is. I'm on Maxis.

I think kamoe is talking about wifi or ethernet. Not 3G.

If wifi - the connection was good at SWV where i was staying.

There are also several of my friends with wifi broadband and the connection was also good. Friends using Maxis and Celcom..

My advise, also double check with the resort.

Hi, and thanks for all the quick replies. Yes I am talking about Wifi not 3G.
The issue is that I have had various experiences on internet access coming and going on surch islands before (In Thailand) and that even many of the hotels claim to provide wifi access in the rooms. The quality and the actual cover can be pretty poor.

I just need a working stable wifi connection so I can do some work while enjoying the island and the diving.
Could be staying for some time as long as I can get some work done as well...

kamoe, as narco said, try sipadan water village if you're staying on mabul island.

internet service is pretty weak generally speaking if you're not on mainland sabah.

if you don't mind staying at semporna while diving at mabul (a common practice when resorts at mabul are full), that's your best bet for decent wifi.

I'm sorry, i'm not familiar with semporna resorts so I can't recommend any.

yeap if you want to have assured wifi, Semporna is THE place to be in. I stayed and dived with Sipadan Scuba and have no complains about their wifi. They even have a terminal at the lobby for those who don't have a notebook.

cool job man!!! i guess you get to stay at these resorts for free while doing maintenance?

Sipadan Water Village has stable satellite broadband Internet access. I know because my company has been providing satellite broadband to SWV, Seaventures, Kapalai Resort, Mataking, etc for years. One more thing, when it rains, the Internet connection is not interrupted.

SWV Satellite Broadband. Notice the size difference between the ASTRO and satellite broadband dish.  The only difference - when it rains heavily, ASTRO goes down.

That's me doing some preventive maintenance

decimal bro and all, i'm not sure if they provide in room to all or not. But when i switched on my wifi on the mobile, yep.. i got connection. To all room? That i'm not sure. But in my room, yes i got it although the signal wasnt that great. Just that it is a bit of hassle since user will have to get the login/password from the lobby.

Decimal bro, lets go there next year and test it out again.. hehe

SWV provide WIFI but signal depend on which room you stay.
You hav to request the username and password from SWV reception
