MUW Mass Dive II ? 12/04/13--14/04/13@Taman Marin Tun Sakaran

it is my honest opinion that divers make the best ambassadors to every nation and every worthwhile cause.

we met through the internet via MUW and we shook hands on the 12th apr 2013 without hindrance of race, class or religion. we spent the next 3 days laughing, ribbing each other and enjoying our common bond--diving.

i must say from the very start that thanks to raffidi who organised everything from diving, food, drinks, kitty fund and transportation, without whom, we would probably still be cooking mee segera at MataKing Island!! the kelapa muda not you right?

folks, i have been on very exciting dives and i have been on this dive..it was a riot! the participants and the DM's really got along well right from the words, 'drink plenty of water ' (more on this later, eh jangan ketawa)

we laughed from 0715 hrs till 2230 hrs. adoi, sampai menangis.

my wife and i arrived a day earlier to survey the sites of any 'penceroboh' so our friends will be secure. (like real !). but the actual fact was that on that unfortunate intrusion friday, precious lives were lost and one of the DMs'--Nas was held in house arrest for many many hours. shops were closed and ppl stocked up on the essentials.

we met the rest of the mass dive around 1730 hrs as i was lugging my weight belt--better known as my camera casing--back to the hotel. somebody shouted my name and i replied, ' no, i don't owe you any money!!' i thot ah long

to my delight, it was raffidi! this was the first time i am meeting the organiser. and later we met the rest of the gang. rizal whom i have the pleasure of meeting a couple of years back came with the group.we have dived with total strangers before, but this i feel was special. you know sometimes when fit of the shirt is just right? oomph feeling? this was it.

dinner ensued and the plan for the rest of the 3 days was discussed. the thing that raffi (term of endearment) did and kudos to you my friend was to invite the DM's out to dinner with us on the very first and every dinner in fact, that really made the bond between dive staff and the clients. brilliant!

our first dive was to Mantabuan Island. i think very few ppl preach on the outer islands here in Semporna. granted Sipadan Island is the jewel but i have been here twice now and i would encourage ppl to go and dive the outer islands. the waters are clear, warm and the corals are just as healthy.

it was as advertised, calm waters, plenty of kodak moments and a barrel of laughs on the boat. special mention must be made of Nas, who is a live-wire keeping the guests entertained with his stories of sexual innuendo. psst thats why i keep my doors chained!! anyway…the food on board did as it was supposed to, keep the hunger pangs away. no hot drinks though. oh it might be worth yr while to bring your own foodstuff just in case (as russell peters would say).

aha…you know that it is good to drink water before and after your dives? did you also know ? that if the signs of sea-sickness show on your face, drink plenty of water? and if you fly off within the no-fly-zone, to be safe..you ? correct! drink plenty of water!! we laughed and laughed. that was the most important thing i discovered on this dive trip. (errr if you are about to take your Open water, do not i repeat do not use the above as an example ).

the other thing i learned was by waving your pointer gracefully in the water your husband will eventually come to your side. then show you that the other end has a ding ding ding!! ( i just know i am going to kena for this one!)

and also if you want to indicate to the group that there is an octopus around the area, you should not pull our your octopus hose. other ppl will think you are short of air!!

and we have a new dive specialty class. not Nitrox but iNi….trox. its not green label.

if anybody hands you their camera be prepared for bouancy problems as their camera be worth 2 lead weights.

when diving, we have cleaner shrimp, when we are eating we clean the shrimp, just a few nuggets of wisdom i learned along the way to 15 dives.

nasi kuning is a firm favourite amongst us and all kopi stalls have them. roti chanai was another good b fast fare. teh tarik needed more tea i think. did you know that condensed milk is not available in malaysia? all are creamer.

a lot of everyday items are available in semporna through Giant-the hyper mart. and if you are looking for a rinse bin for your camera, u can buy one from Giant. err getting enough water to fill the thing is another matter. the boat is not really for ardent photographers, so pls plan ahead if you are diving with Scuba Junkie.

u start the day by lugging your gear from the dive shop to the jetty. there are groups of boys with wheelbarrows that could be hired to roll your heavy stuff to the jetty for a small fee.

it was during one of these moments of labour that i realised the awful truth of global warming, the jetty was under 3 inches of water at high tide. surely, when this jetty was built, it was above water?

we were a big group and we took up 2 boats. a word of caution here, pls do not bring any valuables with you on to the boat (or any boat anywhere for that matter) as our group lost a lot of money on one of these boats--RM450!! thats a lot of money. we of course reported to the manager.

the next day we dived Mataking Island. this is by far the best dive spot i have been to that had everything for everyone. a mini wreck with a post box. (nowadays, with all this electronic mail, no wonder it sank!) macro haven. and visibility that was astounding. you could see the wreck clearly as you jumped into the blue. plenty of squat lobsters, frog fish and nudis as well. truly a diver's wish list.

during the surface interval, we were sitting just outside an army outpost, one of the border patrols after the intrusion, we can expect to see many more of these in the coming weeks as we saw planeloads of army personnel at Tawau airport.

a few kind souls climbed a coconut tree and picked young coconuts for our enjoyment. it was absolutely thirst quenching in that afternoon heat. i tend to think some of us have a road side stall selling kelapa muda the way they chopped the coconuts like a pro! thks guys.

the jetty dive spot in the afternoon was just as exciting. macro as well. drift diving at its best. honestly if we showed you the video you would not know the difference between here or Maldives or Bahamas. (kami setuju beli produk tempatan!) we are happy that the corals here are growing healthy and the fish population is doing well.

the Mataking resort looked fairly deserted probably because of the news lately of the intrusion. and looking at its rates and packages, i honestly believe our plan was a better option. just have a look at their rates and you will understand what i mean.

that night when we came back to semporna, we nearly did a night dive…rizal, maybe next time lah.

oh yeah, folks, if you are diving with SJ, don't forget when its live band night, go say hello to Aziz. he can sing! aku ingat main main aja…power! the resident band is good all things considered. raggae, rock, metal…hokkien, cantopop..Aziz is also a very good critter hunter, as the pictures will attest.

the group did not do the usual kapalai, seaventure and mabul combo, as we wanted to do the outer islands. which was a good thing too as there were a lot of non-shooters. they would have found it boring after 2 dives of critters hunting. sometimes we forget that not all are into macro photography.

the rest of the gallery consist of the usual suspects that Edgar, Nas (the entertainer ) and Aziz 'korek' for us. of all ,the artifial reef at Mabul Water Bungalow had the best collection, my first time here. no wonder the prices for the bungalows are sky high!!

the group stayed at Holiday Dive Inn whilst my wife and i stayed at Sipadan Inn II. meals were reasonable but clean. laundry is available close to SJ, they can send to your hotel whilst you are diving. reasonable prices.clean fresh smelling.

Sipadan Inn II had 2 pairs of slippers in the room, so there is no need to buy. a mini-safe, coffee/tea making facility, TV with limited Astro channels. the transportation by SJ is the best deal around. my wife and i paid RM90 each way--1 van all to ourselves. other inns were charging RM30 per pax or RM150 per van.

we flew AirAsia, so you can check the prices in their website. 9 dives cost us RM580 (apr 2013 prices) and food and drinks, plus transportation came up to RM400. SJ gave us a good discount. thks SJ! accommodations came up to RM320 (twin sharing) for 4 nights.

in closing, this is THE MOST memorable dive ever. we have never met another bunch of divers so full of life and so friendly. shazriman is planning another event (i think) and i know raffidi will come out of his semi-retirement to do another exciting episode of mass dive MUW!! (trust me on this, if its a property project by raffi, its a good deal) so drop whatever you are doing, take out a bank loan if you have to, but join us, laughter after all adds years to your life. seriously!!

there are so many things i want to say to you guys at mass dive II, but enough to wish you…... may you live long and prosper my friends!!

honestly (and we paid for all our dives) SJ's rates are the best, i keep all my receipts from all my dives. very basic boat and meals but save a lot brudder! but somehow we felt there was a little resistance when it came to night diving ??? right Rizal?

I'm very proud to say that after such a long wait for the trip and hoping that all goes well, things went better than expected with such fun and easy-going people who made the trip a success. Everyone played their part enjoying themselves on this trip. Mostly were strangers but from an outside view, everyone looks like they knew each other for a long time. Even Kam who followed me for the first time had the impression that I knew everyone for ages..... ;)

The pointer story (hopefully) will not be told here but will kept for ours next mass-dive trip's dinner.....and guys, it's worth the commitment to the next mass-dive to get the full detail of a story called "The Pointer".... :))

Thank you all that was there for having fun!

This is the one we found in Timba Timba while you guys doing the Mataking jetty. Spend more time with it to get a better shot since the first 2 black froggy did not turn out too well.
