Darvel Bay, Lahat Dato

Post Number:#1  Postby raffidi » Fri Dec 07, 2012 11:43 am

Travel all the way to check this place out as it's a place that is not spoken of. Found out about this place from our MUW friends, DEE and Fish-Hunter and was really nice of them for being a great host from my arrival to my departure from Tawau. They speaks highly of this place being nice and cheap.

Spend a night at Tawau town and left the next day to Lahat Dato which was around 1hr45m drive. The last bit of driving getting to the DC was a 4km dirt road made for 4WD and lucky Fish-Hunter drives one. On arrival we were met by our DM who is also the owner of the place. The DC is very spacious with areas for getting ready and area for relaxing after dives.

I was informed that this place is not an area for big fishes but more corals. Once ready we headed out to our 1st dive spot called "Little Reef". 2nd dive was at the sunken wreck and last dive was at Baik Island. Sure enough, corals were in abundance and the marine life was actually very healthy. This is actually a place for macro lovers.

Spend a night at Lahat Dato after the dives and back to the airport the next day with some sight-seeing by Dee and Fish-Hunter.
Posted some pictures and anyone interested can contact, Dominic Monteroso of Darvel Bay Diving, 019-8235237 or 012-8189281 or e-mail: dmonteroso@hotmail.com
Cost of diving is, 2dives RM120 and 3dives RM150 with own equiqment. Extra RM50 a day for full equipments rentals.
Rooms averages RM70 (double)-RM100 a night (triple).

A great lesson learned from this trip.....don't forget you camera!!! Brought my casing but camera was back home ....can't seem to punish myself enough! Land pictures with my mobile and relied on Dee and Fish-Hunter for underwater memories.
But not too worried as I'll be returning to Darvel Bay as they have lots of unexplored areas and I now know 2 really nice divers/ friends from Tawau to dive with.....Thanks Dee and Fish-Hunter for a great time.

it seems like shallow diving, is it right?
How is the viz like around Darvel Bay? Judging from the word Bay its same meaning as greenish? looks from the pix something like that.
Got seagrass around that area or not?
RM150 3 dives is cheap , hopefully they wont mark up once many divers going there :p
Sipadan diving now too luxury. Now i want to find schools of Jacks, sharks, baracudas and bumphead elsewhere.

Hi run,
Answers to your questions, viz was very good on that day even after a very heavy downpour in between 1st and 2nd dive.
Water is blueish overall and a bit greenish (only a bit) near the Islands.
No seagrass around there. The picture you see of shallow corals is if front of the DC and good for snokelling. About 30m out the is a drop-off to about 15-20m. The first dive we were at 30m, the viz was good and the corals plenty.
But if you're looking for the same stuff that you find in Sipadan, this is not the place. When you find this "Shangrila" do tell.....

Me and Fish Hunter went to Darvel Bay again yesterday......quite happening with more divers coming and 2 groups of youngsters taking OWC with Dominic and another PADI instructor.  We anticipate more divers will be coming as I chatted with one of the newly certified divers (from Lahad Datu) who told us that they plan to come to Darvel Bay every Sunday as it is near to them and of course due to the cheap dive rates.

Dee since this is your playground (wow wat a marvellous things to say. how i wish my home just a short trip away to the nearest dive site) and u r a regular/weekly diver, might as well
try sketches the dive site and what kind of things to find. Macros, type of corals.
Not only that it enchances your navigation and identification skills. Heck who knows you might one day be our underwater guide :p

I enjoy very much when i get to be brief with a 2d dive map. Especially when the dive guide point out "at this depth.., under this stone..., at this seafan..."
i already can imagined what kind of dive i will be doing.

Hi run....not really my playground actually, hehehe.  You could say that to Fish Hunter (it's less than an hour's drive from his house), he's been diving here almost every week since over one and a half years ago.  I've to travel from Tawau to dive here.

As a newbie (just got my OWC middle of September), I've to commit my self to dive here twice a month in order to improve on many aspects of the diving skills, still got a lot to learn to be a good diver!  I would love to come here every week if possible but as I've commitment in other activities too (badminton and tennis), I will do it twice a month for a start besides planning to go to other Islands in Semporna as well.

I will talk to the DM and find out more info on the type of corals and macros we could find here in Darvel Bay.

Dee,

Wow ...you play tennis. me too. Anyway, I'm quite familiar with LD. Been to Sahabat and even further than Sahabat. BUkit Balacon, Tanjung Labian, Bakapit and more. The coast of Lahad Datu especially on the way to Sahabat has potential.

I'm in KK tonight. Drive to LD takes 5 hours from KK. Next time.  The cool part about this part of land is you can land in Tawau, rent a car and head to Danum Valley and then go diving in LD. Skip all the Semporna, Mabul, Sipadan chaos.

Dee,

Drive from Tawau to LD is only 2 hours. We in Peninsula Malaysia have to drive from KL

a) To Tioman = 4 hours drive and 2 hour boat ride
b) To Perhentian = 6 hours drive  and half an hour boat ride
c) To Redang = 5 hours drive  and one hour boat ride
d) To Tenggol = 4 hours drive and 45 minute boat ride

You're a lucky diver. Please find me a plantation job in Tawau.

I bought AA tix to Sandakan during promo recently, no plan for diving actually. Since I have 4D3N, it would be a waste if I don't go for diving and Lankayan is too expensive for me. I don't mind to take 5-6 hours bus ride to Semporna and take 1-day trip (3dives) from any DC based at Semporna.

But this Lahad Datu kind of interesting, not far as Semporna from Sandakan and cheaper dive rate.

mmm... any idea..?
