MANTANANI - DIVERS EXPERIENCE

Post Number:#1  Postby Narco » Fri May 11, 2012 3:42 pm

Hye Folks,

I'm visualising me diving in Mantanani sometimes next year. Playing with Dugong and stuff.

However, i cant seems to find a good review on Mantanani except for a review in 2009 (which is pretty on the down side). Is the dugong still there? Is there any resorts on the island (cant seems to find much info on the web)? Are the sites good or seriously badly damaged by fish bombing? Are there mantanani lovers out there?

I would appreciate sharing on Mantanani.

Bro Narco,

I went to Mantanani back in 2010 when I was still a new bie diver. I was in KK and I snuck in 2 dives and came back to KK on the same day. What can I say about Mantanani? At that time, I wasn't the awesome macro UW photographer that I am today so I can't really remember if there are cool nudis or what not. But one thing I can say is that the visibility is very very good. No pelagics. No dugong when I went and also one group went last week, I did not see any pictures with dugong. The drive from KK to the jetty is about 2 hours. From the jetty to the island is around 40 minutes.
So there, no pelagics, no dugong but great viz. Here are some land photos of me in Mantanani back in 2010.

Dugong is one of my dream diving with them. Dugong eat seagrasses on sandy bottom and shallow water.. did you see this area covered by seagrasses while you were there...?

I heard that there were no more dugong.. I think the only place to stay in Mantanani is Mari Mari Backpackers Lodge. Is the place good? Or should one stay in KK if they were to dive in Mantanani?

Can somebody clarify or suggest. I'm checking Air Asia and it's quite cheap for 15-19 March 2013. The whole total cost if were to depart from penang is RM202 (return flight Png-KK-Png).. hehe

I reckon you should do a day dive in Mantanani. Come back to KK , do the 3 dives in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park with Sabah Divers the next day.

Dived Mantanani last year. Followed a group of divers from KK for a 2 dives day trip. Our journey started at around 8.30 am from KK and arrived on the island at around 11.30 am. We did one dive in the morning and another one after lunch and back in KK around 7 pm.

Diving wise, Mantanani has excellent visibility. Viz was simply 20m+, even on the sea floor at depth of 20m, the viz was perfect. The down side, I did not saw much of marine life, macro nor pelagic or even reef fish. Mantanani does have some excellent coral that are wonderful to watch esp with the excellent viz, but they also have a lot of evidence of coral destruction esp from fish bombing. This is a personal observation from just 2 dived done there. I might be in a wrong dive site at a wrong season. I have heard better stories from other divers who have been there.

A friend of mine has dived and stayed with Mari Mari Dive Lodge. You can read his comment about his trip from his blog: http://www.shahsramblings.com

Hi Narco,

As far as i concern, that dugong we did for underwater wedding photo shoot is no longer there. As for staying overnight, mari-mari B&B is quite good, If i in your shoe, i will stay overnight, spend a nice quiet night at the island with the local and take a walk to the village which dont be surprised that the rumah atap comes with flat screen TV!!!!! I seen that.

As for extra night dive in KK.......................PM me kakakakakakak
