Tioman LOB Wavebreaker 4-6 June

Post Number:#1  Postby Bagman » Mon Jun 07, 2010 11:51 pm

Will be posting a report on my recent trip to Tioman on MV Wavebreaker. Am so glad that my brothers and I bought the underwater casing for our Canon G11. Will be posting some of the pics too once my bro has finished uploading them. Pics were all taken by my younger bro, Faisal (MUW nick - faiesal). Will hopefully start updating tomorrow. Now time for some needed rest :)

A total of 22 divers went on this trip. For most of us, this was our first LOB trip and we were extremely excited. Overall it was a great trip. Great food and great company. Kudos to organiser Instructor Shahrim Senik and coorgoniser, faiesal. Out of the 22 divers, 9 took up the Advanced Open Water Course and all of them made it through. Congratulations to all.

Below is a summary of the dive sites that we visited.

- Teluk Bakau (check out dive)
  - great 1st dive. Some nice nudis (common durian nudis)
  - also saw a school of 6 bumphead parrot fish

- Seafan Garden
  - strong currents and poor visibility at the start. most got seperated from groups leaving each with their buddy. some even lost their buddies and abandoned the dive
  - half way towards the end of the dive, currents started to settle down and visibility became better
  - my buddy and I saw a lobster shell. either it was changing shells or got eaten by something. forgot to take a picture of it.
  - was saddened as most of the seafans had dissapeared. I did a dive here 3 years ago and it was majestic. unfortunately, now it is ruined.

- Teluk Kado
  - good visibility and no currents
  - a very relaxing dive

- Marine Park (night dive)
  - visibility wasnt great due to conditions + operation desert by some of the newer divers :p
  - nothing much to see. My buddy and I found a small crab on a soft coral on a rope. was happy. other than that, nothing much

- Batu Bahara
  - great visibility. we dropped off on the shallow side and proceeded to the deeper end
  - there was a slight drift in the midle of the dive
  - saw a large crab  under one of the first few rocks
  - really nice nudi. very small (Chromodoris Bullocki). couldnt take a picture of it because it was soo tiny. macro mode on g11 wasnt enough to focus.
  - nice corals, both hard and soft
  - saw a big barramundi cod

- Pulau Bahara (slow drift dive),
  - a chilling dive. nothing much compared to Batu Bahara

- Batu Baharu (again, cause the dive site was nice earlier)
  - similar stuff as the first dive.

- Soyak
  - great night dive. no current and visibility was quite good.
  - saw a couple of baramundi cods
  - saw a lone sotong (squid). also saw blue spotted rays freely swimming about the sandy, sea whip area.

- Salang Jetty
  - a couple of divers decided to do a midnight dive. they went diving at 12.15am and surfaced about an hour and a half later. maximum depth was about 6m thus why the
      duration
  - to those who went, they claimed it was the best dive of the whole trip. lots to see at the sandy bottom beside salang jetty. marine life included shrimps, crabs and they
even saw a juvenile electric ray
  - I was so jealous after looking at the hundreds of pictures they brought back from the remarkable night dive. why la I didn't go. instead I was hanging about at the top of the
boat which wasnt too bad actually. saw 2 puffer fishes and lots of squid as well as crabs walking on the sandy area.

- Labas
  - this was one of the best dive sites of the lot. great visibility.
  - saw moray eels, blue spotted rays, and towards the end saw a sea krait (sea snake, black and white stripes). this was my first sighting. was truly amazing.
  - nice walls and also a great tunnel to pass through. totally awesome dive site.

- Pulau Burung
  - last dive site of the trip. vis was ok and there was a bit of current towards the middle of the dive which then ebbed away.
  - nice corals. lots of seafans, small one and big ones.
  - this dive site is halfway between tioman and tanjong gemok.  cruised from labas slowly towards this site
  - really wanted to see sharks on this trip. managed to find one small nurse shark under the first coral i peeped under. luckily I had my torchlight. if not I would have definitely
missed it. was really looking for lobsters and crabs, thus why I brought along the torch.
  - was a great last dive for the trip. enjoyed it very much

The only bad news is that there was a lot of coral bleaching at all the dive sites. As mentioned earlier, Sea Fan Garden is now totally ruined. Really sad.

Alright. Will be posting up pics in a bit.
