MV Celebes Explorer LOB - A Trip To Remember

Post Number:#1  Postby jade » Mon Jun 15, 2009 8:00 pm

We're finally back from an amazing dive trip on board the MV Celebes Explorer on 10 - 14 June 2009.... the trip far exceeded my expectation as the organizer and also diver. It was indeed a very enjoyable and memorable trip and I'd like to extend a personal THANK YOU to all 20 divers on board:

1. Aziz                 6. Ismail                11. Alvinsktan        16. JD
2. K.Nor (Aziz’s Wife)    7. Ariff aka Comrade   12. Lee           17. Zalman
3. Bad aka Hamachan   8. Eddin                 13. Kit            18. Akashah
4. Ainil (Bad’s Wife)      9. Kumar                14. Jones           19. Izwas aka Clairvoyant
5. Harfiez                10. Jason               15. Chris            20. Terence

There were also 4 organizers: Myself, Capt Ben aka Molar, Lt. Col Nasir and Zamrose

We made history on MV Celebes Explorer for being:
1. The first local Malaysian group to be on board.... well, with the exception of Chris, who is an Australian ;)
2. The first time MV Celebes Explorer had a group or more than 16 pax... there were 24 divers for this trip!!! :laughing11:

Some of the pics on our arrival day....

Divers were divided into 2 Groups & using 2 boats:
Group A - Kumar, Jason, Terence, Chris, Alvin, Jones, Lee, Kit, Ben, Harfiez, Zamrose & Myself
Group B - JD, Izwas, Akashah, Zalman, Bad, Ainil, Ismail, Eddin, Aziz, K. Nor, Kol. Nasir & Comrade
(Note: Kol Nasir & Comrade jumped ship a few times & joined our boat instead.... hehehehe :icon_tongue:)

Group A had Tom as the Dive Guide while Group B had Jerry.... thank god Tom & Jerry were not chasing each other underwater  :laughing11: :laughing11: :laughing11:

We were promised max of 15 dives for the entire trip, but turned out we did a total of 16 dives!!!

Day 1 - 10 June: Mabul Island
1. Check out dive at SMART Bungalow House Reef - nothing much to see as viz was not that good
2. Night Dive at Paradise 1 - cuttlefish, nudis, scorpionfish, mandarin fish

Image
Sunset at Seaventures

Image
Damn big stone fish during night dive

Day 2 - 11 June: Si Amil Island
We were supposed to go to Sipadan on Day 2 but changed to Si Amil instead. The corals at Si Amil were badly damaged by fish bombing activities so fish were very few. No pelagics to be seen, only macros
1. East Point - turtle, blue ribbon eel, fire goby, robust ghostpipe, nudis
2. Celebes Reef - pygmy seahorse, orang utan crab, leaf fish, frog fish
3. Maratua - frog & leaf fish again, flambouyant cuttlefish
4. Snowy Point - dive site name due to the blurry viz, giving a "snowy" effect underwater
5. Maratua (Night Dive) - turtle, cuttle fish

Day 3 - 12 June: Sipadan
The highlight of the trip! Both groups went to different dive sites during the dives. At Barracuda Point, current was strong, viz was excellent.... Barracudas were there but unfortunately, they were not in a vortex. Like wise, the Jacks were not in vortex also :crybaby2:. Frankly the Barracudas & Jacks group sizes have become smaller... even the sharks & turtles were less [-( :$
1. Group A: Barracuda Point
  Group B: Coral Garden
2. Group A: Staghorn Crest
  Group B: Barracuda Point
3. Group A & B: Drop Off
4. Group A & B: Barracuda Point. Current was stronger than in the morning but Group B got first class seats watching the show :icon_tongue:
Group A were busy hanging on to rocks, "flying" while watching Barracudas only about a meter away from us
5. As the boat couldnt anchor in Sipadan at night, we sailed back to Mabul to anchor and did a night dive at Froggy Lair. Some opted to venture the island instead and visited some old friends on Mabul Island

Hang on or fly through!!!

Jacks galore

Check out Clairvoyant's stunning Sipadan images at http://malaysianunderwater.com/smff/ind ... n.html#new

Day 4 - 13 June: Mabul / Kapalai
1. Kapalai House Reef - we took a group photo here... planning for the pic was fun but we should have picked a different spot instead of the sandy bottom :laughing11:
2. Seaventures, Mabul - no current & viz was surprisingly OK! Take note - the pygmy seahorse is no longer there... dont know whether it's dead or has been moved to another place [-(
3. Eel Garden, Mabul - despite the name, there werent that many eel around!
4. Group A: Seaventures again
  Group B: Lobster Wall, Mabul

Blue ribbon eel

Stone fish pair.... so sweet...

Sorry couldnt provide more details on the dives as I accidentally dropped my dive comp off board after the first dive at Seaventures :crybaby2:. Tom (our DM) went down to search for it but no luck :$
P/S: I'm starting a fund to help me buy a new dive comp :laughing11:

arewhere... come join us la for the july trip. price of RM1750 is slightly higher compared to this june trip... but if you take into consideration the luxury cabins, 5 star service, great food, excellent crew, total of 16 dives, free t-shirt.....then u will see that it's really worth the value :glasses9:

It's still there when I gave it a visit on 11 June but was not there when I revisited the place on the 13th. Balik kampung kot...  :) or it just camouflaged...  :P

Great shots! I am always constantly reminded how far there is to go! I was with the group which arrived at Borneo Divers on the 13th. Saw the Celebes Explorer off Mabul. Funny to think you guys were on board!

Hi, I was in Mabul too on the 11th and 13th. Saw the liveaboard off Mabul, can't imagine you guys are aboard. Must be nice to dive with bunch of locals... satu kepala... I went with operator from Semporna, of the 30 divers, I am the only Malaysian. :P  Thought I was diving in Great Barrier Reef or Grand Cayman or somewhere due to the numbers :toothy6:

May be someday I can dive with you guys...  B-)

huisen & terjun,

We too bumped into a few friends at Sipadan and Mabul... it's always great to catch up :)

Apart from the second trip on 22 - 26 July, I'm planning for more trips hopefully in October and December. Will keep everyone posted on the new dates once I get confirmation from Celebes Explorer management.... Hope to see more local divers on board with us! ;)
