Underwater Camera Ban in Sipadan

Post Number:#1  Postby terjuntiruk » Fri Mar 15, 2013 8:48 pm

Hi divers,

Read today in Underwater Photography Guide that authority will impose a ban on underwater camera in Sipadan. Only professional photographers with proven track record will be allow to bring camera to Sipadan.

There are also possible new requirement that only diver with Advanced Open Water with 20+ dives are allow to dive Sipadan.

Anyone has further infos on these matter?
What is your opinion on these possible ban and requirements?

OH NOOOOO, found this at on website of a DC that organise trips to Sipadan and this was a note under it's Sipadan page.

"DIVING IN SIPADAN ISLAND:
As announced by the Malaysian Government effective 10th Feb 2013 the following rules apply when diving Sipadan Island:
only Advanced Open Water Divers or entry level divers with a minimum of 20 log dives are allowed to dive in Sipadan.
Underwater Cameras, Hand Gloves and Fish Pointers are totally banned in Sipadan"

I'm just shock at this rule to ban underwater camera but the authority would have had a valid reason for this ruling. I'll respect this ruling so thank god I've done my share of underwater photography at Sipadan! As for opinions, this will be a nice topic during our trip to Semporna next month!
Cheers!

Question,
1. Divers with AOW or higher for Sipadan?
2. No Amateur Photographer for Sipadan?

SWV answered at its FB page, "No such rules. But it is recommended in all top dive sites in the world."

Another reason for the certain dive centers to offer money for business.
So now any un-pro divers who wanna have some video and photograph can buy from the resort DC at ridiculous set of amount. Who else can pay for such a thing except for foreigners.
Sipadan now almost as if not welcoming locals for a dive there. How very dissappointing it is.
