Sorry but I think there is no such thing as RM1000 for camera and housing... My Lumix was RM1200 and the casing itself was RM700. Some casings are more expensive than the camera.
But let me tell u this, it is a very rewarding investment.

toodus is right. maybe 2nd hand, 1,000, old model.

to start  - get a point-and-shoot cam for around 600, then casing around 700.

Agree. Perhaps you can go for a 2nd hand first. After you have trained yourself well enough in underwater photography and learned about care and maintenance for the camera and housing you can upgrade to a better one. Anyway i'm also new, just got my lumix and housing for 1600 earlier this month. Haven't try the housing yet  :icon_biggrin:

Ok let me share my journey with you.

I started with an Oly 8000 water resistant to 10M. Casing increased the depth to 40 M. Then I sold it off to buy a Canon which I sold off to buy my present m43 Oly. Buying and selling has cost me the price of a Canon G12 and casing!!!!

My recomm is to get one higher...yes where to get the money...but in the end you will save. I am on the verge of going DSLR but my own story keeps discouraging me.

So how to tell if you really need to buy more than you need?

Look at the pictures ppl post and the equip used. If you can get the quality of pictures with the camera and strobe used, then that's what u should spend. Not anything lower or else you end up buying and selling.

But if you just want yo shoot anything and everything underwater, then a used camera with casing is all you need. 1K  RM I think can get. Better check the casing though
alamak, the tank goes at the back??

Here's my story.

I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC FT1. Waterproof and shockproof because I'm an outdoors person - waterfalls, sea kayaking, hiking. What prompted me to get a casing was when I was touring the Middle East. As I would be diving in the Red Sea, I thought to myself " Might as well. I won't be going back there"

So now I have a the same casing and same camera. With no strobe and no macro lens. Many a times I feel like upgrading, but it's just too expensive and RM800 can buy you a nice sofa from IKEA. I try my best to take nice uw shots with my limited features. Some times I get good pictures , sometimes I don't. But I realized my night pictures are nicer bcoz the pictures at night only needed my in built flash.
It is ultimately frustrating when I get bad uw shots.

Frustration + Low on air + Bad uw pictures + Current  = ADRENALIN

So, get a basic camera and basic housing. Go as near to the subject as possible. Shoot 64 pictures of a nudibranch and post the best one here in MUW like I do and embrace the challenge. It's much more fun this way. But if you have cash, get your strobe and macro lens becuase it makes a lot of difference.

Nadzir30,
Let me decide for you. Get a camera and a casing first. That's it. Go to the shop now....and no turning back. It's the best feeling in the world when you're underwater taking pictures....

You will never get this kind of pricing unless you are buying it 2nd. If you do get it, better check the camera and casing thoroughly. Watch for any residue. If found , dont buy it.

Try this http://www.backscatter.com/learn/article/article.php?ID=57#Advanced and this http://www.bluewaterphotostore.com/best-compact-underwater-cameras-2012

If i were you, i'll buy the canon g12 or s95.
Good image and wallet-friendly.
Ask around, there are many diver using it.
Maybe you can buy it 2nd hand.
But i suggest u buy it new, since g12 been on the scene
for quite some time.
Im sure it is not that expensive now.
Hope this helps.

bought the Seashell case for my Sony W350 camera at Mide for less than 500

had so much fun taking pics in Mabul immediately. no regret. Macro shots not so good but the landscape photos are OK.

again - spend as much as u can on the camera to ensure better pics. me, i'm just an underwater tourist taking touristy type pics hehehhe

I wouldnt recommend sealife.
Better bought camera with housing combo.

a quick advice on buying.
now that Photokina 2012 is over.
it is a great time to buy cameras.
The reason is that new cameras are about to roll out.
So the older cameras will be cheaper.

FYI, I just bought Sealife DC1400 14 Megapixel Underwater Camera and HD Video Pro Set with Digital Pro Flash direct from Scuba.com at USD799.95 (retail @ USD825.95) as my 1st ever underwater camera.  Was using it when i went for dive at Darvel Bay to test the Camera.  Have not tested the video yet but will do so during my next dive trip on Nov 18th.  The Camera is really easy to use with some pre-programmed underwater modes and i do think that the quality of photos taken turn out good.

Attached are some photos taken (some underwater plants which i still cld not identify)......

Love the xmas tree worms too! Reminds me when I was diving in Boracay, I was playing with it snapping my fingers and all, little did I realize that there was a lion fish just few inches away. Lucky it didn't strike, phew!

I luv them too....just so beautiful.  My 1st encounter with lion fish was when i dive in Mabul sometime in Sept.  At that time, I was still struggling with my buoyancy control as i've just passed my OW certification.  I've gained my confidence now that i just could not wait for my next dive scheduled on Nov 18th.
