Progressing from Rec to Tec

Post Number:#1  Postby John F SeaDemon » Thu Feb 22, 2007 7:00 pm

Technical diving is a natural progression from recreational diving. There's that wreck you would love to see but is too deep for your current qualification; or there is a cave in your backyard that you would like to map: the only way t go is to do technical diving.

Which of the courses above do you think you would do before the end of the year? And why?

I would love to try advanced nitrox and deco procedures. Wanna try how does feel like goin above 40m, tryout wrecks and cave. The discipline, practical and technical knowledge really amuses me. But i know it takes alot of discipline and effort to go thru that course.....there's no room for error :-?

The rest of u guys, kalau nak buat tec dive, off course u need to start with the basic first.  the courses will start by taking Advanced Nitrox and follow up with Deco Procedures.  U also need to prepare urself phisically, mentally, knowledge wise and also $$$ for your courses till ur equipments. Hehehe.  If u guys come prepared, then it would be much easier.  Don't forget ur basic skills too.  ;)

hehehehe btw wat i meant by above 40m is in terms of numbers...ie 41m, 45m and so on...Tapi u right saying tech divers dive DEEP BELOW ;)

Now, on another related matter, do you think tech diving will catch on in Malaysia? Is the number of dive centers that cater for tech diving sufficient (having a minimum of a Nitrox blender)?

Hi guys

To involved in technical diving it's lots of money to spend.. 1st thing if you consider to jump in tech diving is to find a Good, good instructor. very important especially this type of diving. We see alots of crappy instructor just want our money not the quality of teaching. Go find out with exprienced tech diver like ( SNAFU )  where you can find good instructor. He might help you to find one around Malaysia.

Also you need to think about new gear and gas aswell. Price courses doesn't include your mix. you pay your own mix !. For technical course you should at least 4 regulator 2 high performance on the double ( since you planing to dive deeper ) with 2mtr hoses and 2 for you deco bottle , Backplate/wings, lift bags, lights, backup light, reel/spool/ computer or bottom timer and  cutting divice. You can't use jacket BCD anymore so keep it for rec diving or sell to friend. Also in Canada i need to get my own drysuit ( very expensive) so you guys pretty lucky just wearing 3mm full suit. I'm use APEKS for reg and most my gear from Diverite or Halcyon.

Here in Canada to refill 100% deco bottle around $25-30 cdn ( i blend my own mix  ::) ) depend the depth you planning to dive right ? and again on Helium aswell ( alots of money ). i use helium when i dive deeper than 40mtr . normally 21/30 mix( double ) with  Deco 50% or 100% O2 . I think in Malaysia they charge you for helium around $1.00 ( US) per cuft. like 30mtr range i go with 32% ( cost $25 RM per tank ) it's mean every time you do 2 dive on the boat  with you spend at least $50-$100 Rm can be more depend the depth range and mix.. every bubble it's come from your reg is $$$$$. i just recently move to Closed circuit rebreather still in training  8-) so Back to original post . my next step is Full cave qualification !

Safe diving

Haha...you are right, Zaha. Basically I need a new set of everything for tech diving. Everything's on the high end. And even though I own an Oxycheq BI system, I still need a 50lb wing (I keep my 30lb for recreational dives). On top of that, two Poseidon Jetstreams, one with 2m hose, the other one as my back-up; 2 Oxycheq regs (O2 ready) for my deco bottles. Extra light, extra mask. I use my ATOM on gauge mode as bottom timer but rely on my slate for my deco plans (plus 3 and lost gas and all that). I hope to get a HS Explorer soon as an addition to my redundant system.

I think here for a 21/30 mix would cost RM264 per dive, EAN50 RM44 per 12L bottle (I like them big) and O2 is RM88. For deeper, say to 65m, an 18/33would do. That would cost RM291 per dive. Yeah, imagine 2 dives per day.

For caves and holes, I leave it to the Holemaster. He's an expert a that. ;)

Bro... IS EXPENSIVE when comes to gas.

Whenever I want to go for technical diving in Malaysia ... I would go with MV Empress, remember Captian Vidar & Alice ... gas are cheaper with them & diving are just AWEsome.

I have a lot to learn in diving, so many theories & stories.

;D
