Whcih Reg to go for?

Post Number:#1  Postby Bluemoon » Wed Sep 17, 2008 2:14 pm

To all Tech diver out there....May i know which reg are you using and which to get if i plan to go for Tech dive in future? At this moment i don't own any reg....opinion/feedback needed before i invest my money on it(would be one time for all). I am eying on Apeks at this moment as it is well know as durable and easy to maintain(correct me if i am wrong).

I'm using my Mares Abyss.. Apeks is a good brand... not bias on anything... hehehe.  Just try whichever you feel comfortable with and do some research on the product review.

Hi mocha....Poseidon is a good reg ...no doubt, but is it easy to get in Malaysia? As far as i know the service is not cheap, is it require yearly service or 100 dives? What will be the cost like?

I use Poseidon Jetstream.

But I've used my SeacSub Diamond Ice before.

My humble point of view... I think that if you have an intention to do tech diving in the future, why don't you invest for a good reg now.. You still can use the reg for recreational diving. No harm.

APEKS

Cheap to service
Good support from distributor in S'pore

If you DIY,
Easy to service
Easy to get parts
Anyone can do a dive to 100m or more.....
But how many will return alive???

My vote will be scubapro Mk17/ G250 or Mk25/G250..

Light and hoses rotation quite nicer.. Free service parts and life time warranty.

I think the Apeks DS4 1st stage with XTX50 2nd stage is the cheapest & offers the most value for money reg you can find for tek. Can tune the venturi & gas flow to suit the diving conditions on the fly.....

I won't quote any brands but if you are serious about tech - IMHO and from experience you should consider din first stage (coz din-to-yoke adapter is cheap and u need din anyway), good hose routing on the first stage (for your twins later), must be able to be O2 cleaned, easily servicable near where you live and if possible all of one make (can be used as back-up kit). Be prepared to spend a bit more for a better reg now coz it will save you money in the long run (no need to firesale the cap ayam reg that you mistakenly bought when you first start diving)

Best of luck

Thanks for your opinion...Din valve is the way to go ..no doubt.

this is the reason that i don't mind to spend a bit more so that i don't need to do any further upgrading....unless i am going to do minimum 5 tech trip a year. Maintenance cost is my main concern. ;)

Another question here to think about....i found out that XTX200 is not in the 'Tech' range when you come to Aqualung website. Is there any particular issue on that?

No issue. The 2nd stages parts & design are the same be it 50, 100 or 200. The only difference are the 1st stages. At the end of the day, the specs only varies very slightly where WOB and gas delivery is concerned. It's only a matter of which set you prefer.

Also for Apeks reg.. between XTX or TX basically is identical reg. only size different. I use to own 4 Fsr 1st stage(Black pearl) which is tx 200. I sell it and move to Scubapro quite a while.

Bluemoon:  If you consider go for Apeks line, DS4 1st stage and xtx 50 or 100 way to go for double configuration. Like Sicko say cheap to service easy to tuning as well. Of course all reg have to be 300 Bar Din.
take you time to choose the right stuff, technical diving is awesome type of diving but you need to practice alots.. Welcome to the dark side.!

Zaha Knowing that ATX series is no longer in the market, unless going for 2nd hand. Only thing i don't really like about the ATX series is in vertical position, the bubble will blow up to your face...this issue have been corrected/solve for the XTX series. SO XTX 200 is not in the list?

By the way...any commend about the Atomic M1? Seademon...care to share your find out? Thanks.

G250.. Heavier, rugged (bullet proof) all stainless steel on adjustment knob..

S600 lighter.. basically both balanced regulator..

What do you use SKK??

currently i'm using oceanic delta4 and gt3.. both similar design, only cosmetic difference... it's not a .. so called tech reg.. but so far.. it's good.. and no comment from tech instructor :)  :icon_thumright:

but for hose routing... mk25 has a better hose routing :P
cheers...
