Hi, this is my first post but I have been diving for 30 years.  I have asked marine biologists about the timing of coral spawning in local waters but no one has given me a good answer.  I understand that the timing of a particular species of coral can be predicted every year once observed, usually abour 5 to 7 days after the full moon (11 April is 6 days after).  Can you supply any more information about this so that I can plan my trips to try to see it.  Is it true that March, April and May are the best months to do so?
Thanks
Seamoth

Coral spawning was recorded twice in Lankayan this year, in April and May, both few days after full moon. I believe that most of the Marine Biologists cannot provide you a good answer because we really know too little about this especially in Malaysia.

It is well known that this usually occurs around the full moon following Spring Equinox (the time when the day and night are of equal length). So perhaps you have higher chance to see coral spawning in the months you mentioned. Timing is very important because the spawning ends in quite short time, probably around half an hour based on some research papers describing this phenomenon. If you get into water too late or too early you might miss it.
