Hello everyone,

I'm 21 year old newbie from Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia. The reason I posted here because I want some advise and guide from experienced diver like you guys.

Currently I'm a freelance NDT (non-destructive testing) inspector for about a year now. But as a freelancer, my monthly income wasn't really stable. Sometimes the pay also not good. So I'm planning on becoming 'NDT Inspection Diver'. As a start, 3.1 U NDT inspection diver, and TWI has an offer for that courses in Thailand.

For that, I have a few question in mind that i kindly hope u can help. As for now, I don't have any experience on working offshore, above sea, or subsea. So this are the question:

1. where can I get the HSE part 1 courses? And if I get cert for HSE part 1, am i eligible to start working?
2. by becoming ndt inspection diver, is it true about the high pay?
3. ADAS 3 vs HSE part 1, which one is better?
4. between maritime/marine and Oil&Gas industries, which one is better? (better = salary and long term employment).

need a guide [-(

IMO;

1. Australia, New Zealand, France, United Kingdom & South Africa
- start working YES, getting work is the hard part.

2. No, is just an advantage to get u work

3.  Both teaches U to dive
- ADAS tix. U need to renew every 5yrs
- HSE have no expiry date

4. O&G will give u better ROI but not easy to get in
- Air diving market is saturated in Malaysia, will be very hard for new diver to get work

RM60k-RM70k est. for Air diving course....think really hard if U want to be a commercial diver for O&G, I know people that graduated 2yrs ago n not getting work.

I know of divers getting RM50 a day also right now.

Wan,

There will always be work but do you want to take a chance and spend RM100K (that includes your Dive ticket, Inspection Ticket, Offshore tickets) and take a gamble that there are work outside of Malaysia??..

Think long and hard on it and you will find your answer...:)

1. where can I get the HSE part 1 courses? And if I get cert for HSE part 1, am i eligible to start working?
Answered by SNAFU. Check out www.longstreath.com for the training centres around the world.

2. by becoming ndt inspection diver, is it true about the high pay?
The pay is just an additional 50-100 more than an Air-Diver but a bit more in demand as Air Diver dah berlambak in the market....

3. ADAS 3 vs HSE part 1, which one is better?
Answered by SNAFU. HSE no need renewal. Thats the best part....

4. between maritime/marine and Oil&Gas industries, which one is better? (better = salary and long term employment).
O&G definitely la better pay. Long term employment however about the same coz most divers are freelancers. And it all depends on your yearly medicals...

I was one of those yang balik course end of 2008 got no job coz economic downturn and offshore diving companies at that time because had a limited number of jobs preferred experienced divers. Persevered and did a lot of other job before finally getting my lucky break with a Kerteh based diving co. in 2010. Since then, have been working regularly with a couple of other co. till now.
If you think it is expensive to hire a professional to do a job - wait until you hire an amateur.
