Going alone... so if any MUW going can join me for teh tarik at Ketua Kampung shop there...
Not so rich and simple traveler, so just stay at Billabong/ Arung Hayat.....
Nice if can pool taxi to Semporna on 25th as well and from Semporna back to Tawau on 29/11/2011.  ;)

just a suggestion if you are thinking to saving some money on transport.

In Tawau airport, either get a taxi (RM45) or bus (RM10) to Tawau town
In Tawau town, get on a bus to Semporna - RM10/=

In Semporna, get on a van that goes to Tawau and ask the driver to drop you in the airport. Normal price is RM10 to Tawau but to detour to airport is RM20/=

Easy and cheap.

Last time (travel alone), I share a van with other tourist who I met at arriving hall couple from China.. from Tawau Airport-Semporna Rm30/each so 3 ppl Rm90/per way... the van driver ask me first and I ask the China couple to join me....

You can ask tourist (that look like backpackers) to share a van/taxi with you...

thanks for all suggestion...
what i did on first time alone there, not a diving trip, just a swing trip after mountain climbing, 3 years ago was get a rent Kancil from airport, and just explore the Tawau area on morning arrival date, theres nice waterfall there, ..RM40 for car (good deal for me)+ RM25 fuel
...by late evening move to Semporna ( almost dark). Sleep on cheap hotel, early next morning, walk around market there, then take a boat to Mabul from U Chang service, snorkelling/island tour.. RM40 for hotel, RM80 for U Chang..breakfast and lunch provided.
...get back to Semporna town around 5.30pm...drive back to Tawau airport for 9pm flight back to KL. ..its was fun, until a friend told me scary thing about pirates along Tawau-Semporna road by night.

My subsequent trip was for diving a year ago...
Take a bus (RM10) to town, then another RM10 van to Semporna.
Yes there is bus and taxi service, but bus only available until 3.30pm if i'm not mistaken, and for taxi , they will charge you double on each trip unless you make early arrangement, or it happen that the driver's hometown is from the place you want to go...

Lucky that now i have a RM15/night dorm to stay.

You are so lucky ( zaff) if you found another foreign tourist/ backpackers without a planned trip to Semporna from Tawau.. as previously i seen, them being picked by their own travel agent or dive operator to destination., Or they will just give a stare at you, no matter how innocent looking you are when you asked..
Dive operator usually stick to a minimum pax before arranging a transport for you or you will just pay the full amount...
having say that, it is still fun traveling alone for me...

Just an update.

Just come back from Mabul and Sipadan.
Good wheather.
But only manage for 2 dive at mabul and 2 dive at sipadan due to health reason.
Visibility was good.
Lot of lobster this time at Lobster wall of Mabul- amazing. I counted more than ten, big size... he...if i got the noughty DM, for sure we had a good dinner that night...  :D
Sipadan as expected.. white tip shark, school of barracuda, countless turtle...bla..bla..

Few budget motel at Mabul there already went for major upgrade..good for next few weeks time.. but won't expect them to retain their current price.

Was staying at Billabong ( chok's)... service as for budget motel, friendly staff, lots of foreigner.

If budget and time permits, will go again in May 2012...

No UW pic... sorry.

Arung Hayat --- just near the Billabong scuba, actually i stay there on my last visit there even though i book under Billabong... but mind you that they don't have their own Sipadan permit.
Arung hayat also just add another few unit of room.
Other that upgrade, since my last visit > 1 year ago:  most significant was Uncle's Chang, plenty of room with attached bathroom, and with individual septic tank..good. But what i heard recently that some of their unit sunk..dangerous. Maybe to heavy or had problem during construction.
Scuba jeff and few other which i just saw during boating also construct additional rooms with attached bathroom.

All dive site there had their own interesting thing that may differ with others..just ask the DM/ instructor during your stay there what you want to see, and there will try their best to suit you... as all those creature moving and alive...he..he..
What i don't like with my recent dive was, that my DM was too busy taking macro pic himself..we the one that have to wait for him ..sigh...

At first, Chok of billabong quote me RM1000for 4 dive at mabul, 1 sipadan trip (3 dive) and 3D2N stay at attached bathroom with all food /boat transfer included during stay there. 100% dive equipment from centre. But off course there is refund after i cancelled 1 night stay and 2 dive at mabul due to health reason. No refund for Sipadan permit if you are local unless they get replacement. Foreigner easier to get replacement for permit.
-RM15/ night at hostel (aircond) in semporna. Other option was RM 40 at City Inn for single bed. Rest of Hotel there vary from RM78-RM95 for double bed room with aircond. Sipadan Inn was clean.
Choose hotel near the dive centre or jetty there, or known as New Semporna town or water front town. Old town also okey but you need to carry all luggage to jetty the next morning. And it pretty damn quiet after 8 pm.
-RM10 for bus from Tawau Airport to town. Other option, Taxi for RM45 to town, or RM95 straight to Semporna.
-RM10 from Tawau town to Semporna with van, which need to wait untill fully loaded before they depart. But had plenty of them waiting. Scarily faster than express bus of Tongtalun. Same price of RM10. Last express bas depart by 4 pm from Tawau and 6pm from Semporna. 2 hourly depart. Express bus is a lot safer for me. Last van depart from semporna by 4.30pm.
For van, pick up area near KFC.
For express bus to Tawau, pick up area near Millimewa supermarket.

No problem for last minute shopping since there is Giant in new town with ATM (BSN). There also Millimewa, G mart and few other shopping mart there. I just bought my fast dinner from Giant. Guardian pharmacy just near the jetty.
BSN, Maybank is located at old town.

There's lot of seafood restaurant newly open in Semporna town, but expensive. Go to Tampi2, about RM10 from Semporna town. Choices of seafood variety depend on luck.  ;) . Plenty of mamak/ indian restaurant, but,.. he.. just wait till you get back to KL for nasi Kandar... you know what i mean.

Go to wet market if you want to try their local food and 'kuih'. I had my breakfast there at local 'warung', just facing the old public jetty. Don't do this if you had sensitive stomach.

If you stay at Mabul, just eat whatever available from you dive centre/ motel. I really doubt about the food sell along the houses there. But if you willing to try, there is local islander who sell banana fritter, ais kacang, rojak , burger by late evening along the houses there.
If you need medicine or your blood pressure checked while on the island, just ask for 'ne-neng', Not sure what that its mean, but local there will point you to small grocery shop that happen to sell all necessary medication and have your blood pressure checked with automated machine.

Hope this will help for others budget traveller.
