Author Topic: Awajisan Maru - 1st Japanese Ship to sink in WW2 (Read 4201 times)

The Awajisan Maru (shown above) was built in March 1938 for the Mitsui Lines Ltd in Kobe, launched 22 Dec 1938, and commissioned on 15th July 1939. She weighed 9794 GT and had a top speed of 19.9 knots and had a length of 145.14 meters.

She was acquired by the Imperial Japanese Navy to become a troopship and carried 5,200 soldiers for the landing at Kota Bharu. Although people point towards Pearl Harbor as the place where the Pacific war of WW2 took place, the first shots of the Pacific war was fired in Kota Bharu, at Padang Pak Amat, 12km from Kota Bharu at 12.25am, 8th December 1941. Only 90 minutes later did the attack on Pearl Harbor commenced. She was also the headquarters ship for Maj Gen Takumi Hiroshi's 5th Division.

The Awajisan Maru was damaged and set ablaze by RAF Hudson bombers. She burnt the whole day, then torpedoed by the Dutch submarine K-12 after attempts to tow her to safety by Japanese destroyers failed.

She now rests in 20 meters of water some 3km off Kuala Pak Amat (06 08'N and 102 16'E) near Sabak, and is a favourite fishing ground.

Viz could be bad..but maybe it's worth to dive this huge wreck that is part of the Malaysian history.

Hehehe.I got two tanks..we take 4 days...drive to Sabak, rent a boat, dive the wreck, then we drive to Kuala Besut and spend a few days in Perhentian.

Otherwise, we can do this like one day after Secret Island, so I can recharge my tanks for free, then we drive to Sabak, and dive this wreck. How?

Spazm is gonna be so happy he doesn't have a tank. ;D

I think after Secret Island would be better la...minimal damage to pocket. Can use resources for boat at the wreck.

Seriously, who would like to dive this wreck? I would prefer divers with good dive experience, love wrecks, and must be comfortable diving in low viz. Boat is not a problem as fishing boats can still be rented.

There are pros and cons of using government facilities to do free dives. It's okay if you are a serviceman, I know, although it's wrong, you can always twist around the admin orders to use the boats and so on. The implication is if there is an accident involving civilians who are not authorised insured to travel on military vehicles. I'll leave that to your imagination.

Hi guys, I'm an avid diver (recently certified as a PADI OWSI) and just recently started a diveshop in Kota Bharu, Kelantan called Anti Gravity Dive Supply. You will be hearing more about us in time. I am a local boy, and have known about the history of the Awajisan Maru since my days as a schoolboy. I started doing research on it about 2 years ago. I am happy to say that next Monday (13th Oct), I am finally going down to check it out with some fellow experienced divers. Will post the pics on this thread after the dive.
