This topic came up as a result from Run's observation during MIDE that people were buying gear for the sake of having a complete set. Many a times have we seen divers having and not knowing how their gear works - and we see a lot of this happening with owners of brand new Dive Computers.

Case in example : Diver A bought a brand new dive computer  before going on a weeklong a LOB. The dive computer locked this Diver A out on the second day due to the erratic dive profile. It was only on the third dive day that the others realised that Diver A had no clue whatsoever how the dive computer worked, as Diver A was seen trying to read the manual during SI and was asking a few buddies what the "ERR" displayed on the screen meant.

dp this is so true!!! This was what i saw during mide and this was what happened during my dive before mide especially the dive comp part. One of the diver, say diver A, asked me what was i doing with my buddy showing the DC underwater and then at the surface keep discussing about the DC. My buddy got himself a new dc and so i teach him how to read the thing underwater and on the surface. I asked back to the diver, i am showing how to read temp, plan, etc and guess what diver A said to me "oh is that what Dc for, i just used the DC to check the bottom time and depth".
My eyes was like suddenly become so wide and i think i hold my breath for a sec.

You and your buddy should have the same dive plan. If suddenly your buddy miss one of the repetitive dives, the result will be different.
I give my case on one of dive trip with redang DM. On my 1st morning dive , i was buddied with DM A. Of course i will
go deep on my 1st dive, but on my 2nd dive i was paired with DM B in which for B it was his first dive of the day.
On this 2nd dive i could only managed to stay on certain depth shorter compared to DM B. Example i could only stayed
at depth 15m for 20min whereas DM B was at 20m. DM B was signalling me to come down then i show my DC and my fist! Then he remembered what was going. He was laughing to me while enjoying him time down there.

So anyone who think they want to dicthes any of the dives, ditch the last dive of the day. At least you and your buddy will have the same dive plan again the next day.

I also would like to add another thing, me wearing 2pcs or 3 pcs of weight doesn't mean i am a pro.
Like i said, dont go for the presentation. Look for how well the diver using his/her apparatus underwater and on the surface.
Believe me, another diver will know when they saw a diver pro or not.

Well said, run. It's shouldn't be what you see above water that impresses - ie : the gear, the number (or lack of) of weights used etc.

But more of what you see under - the streamlining, buoyancy etc
