Ketam been through three incidents where professional medical attention was required. All three happened in Pulau Tioman.

1) During Ketam's certification, on one of the open water exercise, prior to the dive ketam step on some sharp rocks on the way to the boat. By the time we reached the dive site, the bottom of the boat was red as Ketam was not able to stop the bleeding. The boat turn around and the dive center gave first aid to stop the bleeding. The resort Ketam was staying had at that time a resident medical doctor and clinic. So it was a visit to the clinic and a tetanus shot. The resort had a helipad which the doctor said can be used to ferry emergency patients to the mainland. This incident happened in Tekek, that has most of the medical facilities in Tioman anyhow.

2) On another trip sometime later, Ketam was diving with a group of buddies at Salang. While boarding the boat, one of the divers fell and had a deep gash on his shin. The dive center promptly gave first aid. But seeing that the gash was quite big, Ketam, Ketamnette and the diver made a trip to the hospital in Tekek. The boat journey by speedboat takes about 15-20 mins. The medical assistant and doctor gave the diver stitches and antibiotic shots. The doctor related that they had an earlier case where a foreign snorkeler/diver had an accident a her head was hit by a propeller blade. A fast boat was dispatch to bring her to the mainland.

3) Another incident happened also in Salang. A diver completing his rescue diver simulations turns real. The simulated victim actually became a victim and had lost her regulator underwater. The instructor brought her to the jetty. Gave CPR and later oxygen. She was later brought by speedboat to the hospital in Tekek. She was later transferred to hospital in JB.

These three incident is Ketam's personal encounters. All three ended relatively well (not sure about the diver involved in the rescue diver simulation, have not heard or met her since). In Tioman at least there is a functioning hospital, though it is Tekek. If you are in the other village, you have to somehow take a trip to Tekek. Most dive centers have well trained personnel competent in first aid and most have oxygen on standby.

The bigger and expensive resorts are also better prepared to handle emergency situation (this is a generalization), the one in Tioman had inhouse doctor and clinic. It is even equipped with a helipad.

There are also insurance that you can take if you want. DAN and several others have specific dive activities insurance with 24 hrs hotline. Though they do not directly provide emergency evacuation in Malaysia, they do help cover the cost should it is required.

dive safe......i saw my own eyes when diving in Dayang where a Singaporean doing night dive around jetty being hit by propeller, i was just right at the jetty when it happend, around June 2008. It shocks me!!!!!!!!! DC quickly respond to the accident by wrapping his head and shoulder where it bleeds, giving O2 as the diver went unconscious. But he wake up after a while and struggle like being in hell......with his head still bleeding and the whole stern covers with his blood.... He then transfer using speedboat and rush to hospital in Mersing and i heard he died just before the boat reach Mersing Jetty.

Dangerous huh.........

Ketam always remind buddies to ascent under the jetty/pier. Some SMB and buoys are not visible at night so please take the extra precaution.

Dive safe always. :crybaby2:

Put your torchlight into your SMB before you inflate it to the surface...the torch should illuminate the SMB and the boat have no excuse not to see your SMB..

Those that have dived with Ketam knows that for night dive, Ketam dive with a flashing strobe and pass out light sticks to buddies. Safety first.

Hi Suhaimi...here's some info about EMP in Pulau Redang, hope this help:

Facilities / Clinics
Most DC in Redang have trained staff to assist EMP's. There is a Doctor stationed in Long Beach ( Laguna ) area.
There's also a GP located in the Village clinic right in the heart of Pulau Redang.

Transportation

- 90% of DC's & Resorts in Redang uses speed boats for their operations.
- The village clinic used to have a RM200K Speed boat Ambulance....heard it's returning operation.
- A police 29 footer fibre glass speedboat is also available.
- There's also an airport in Redang.

Land & Sea Evacuation
- Any emergency evacuation by speedboat will head straight to Merang which is the nearest jetty ( 24 km )
It's accessible in Low & Hi Tide condition.
- Traveling with 28 knots with calm sea condition takes 25-30 minutes to Merang from Redang.

- Nearest Hospital is Kuala Terengganu ( 45 km ), there's a few small medical centers / Pusat Kesihatan on the way.
- Traveling with an ambulance takes around 25 minutes to KT Hospital from Merang.

There's a Dive Center in Merang...Seamonkey DC, if there's any help such as transportation & Medical O2 shortages they can be contacted at :

+609 6691888
+6019 3145820

Hyperbaric Chamber :

- Whatever it takes get yourself DAN ( Divers Alert Network ) Membership & Insurance.
- Not sure about the chamber in HUSM Kubang Kerian, Kelantan ( 1 hr 45 min from Merang ) whether there's a qualify Chamber Operator &
a certify hyperbaric dive physician. Latest heard they are preparing for Dive Injury treatment.
- Maybe folks from Kuala Besut / Perhentian operators can advise.
- RMN base at Lumut, Perak...Dr. Yusof ( +60196627390 )...traveling by land from East Coast to Lumut takes a long time. Best by Air
  evacuation.

Once again be a smart diver get yourself cover with DAN. Hyperbaric Chamber treatment is $$$EXPENSIVE$$$ .Suhaimi hope this help....oso for those doing their Divemaster assignment  :D :D :D :D

( Brickfields got chamber oso.....fill with toddy...gud la dey )  :icon_thumright:
