Need Help on equipment
« on: May 20, 2011, 04:51:57 PM »

Hi Guys,

I am getting my OW soon and I need some advice on equipment that one needs to get started. I am also wearing glasses and I don’t like using contact lenses as it irritates my eyes, what are my options in regards to this.
All your advice are very much appreciated. Thank you.

i beg to differ.

Absolute Basics
stage 1: Mask, Snorkel, Booties (if needed), Fins

stage 2: Dive Comp, Underwater Housing for your camera (if ur into photography), wetsuit/rash guards

This is my recommendation. As for BCDs, Regulators, i will not recommend, unless ur a hard working person and pays attention to details and keep these items well, and of course, dive regularly.
Reason: simple. these items concerns the safety of ur dive. if 1 o-ring crack or burst due to long exposure to heat, or inproper care and maintained.. well, lets just say u'll be exercising everything u learned in ur OW course.

so normally, i'll jst rent BCDs from dive shops, along with regulators. Umm.. you can also buy just the mouth piece too.. if ur a hygiene guy.. those are cheap.

other equipment i bought, gloves (i got my hand cut once decending from rope to a wreck.. after that dive trip, i immediately bought gloves.. just in case), metal stick (i tend to get very excited when i see somethign.. with a stick, i whack my tank to signal friends of the interesting find)..

GREEN LASERPOINTER.. this is damn cool.. RM45 from jalan petaling.. 75mW.. damn strong laser pointer.. when used with 2 layers of condom (please pre-wash to remove the lubricants).. it works like a charm.. can point at fish or interesting finds.. easy for people to follow your laser pointer as a line forms from the pointer to ur target.. but do avoid the eyes of the marine creature.

underwater torch.. if ur into night diving. for me, i jst rent from the resort..

here's my 2 cents comments..

I am also one of those rabun diver (power 800 you) so my first priority is a mask with prescribed lens. Start with that first coz u definitely would want a clear vision to enjoy the dive. As for other equipment (fin, bcd, dive comp) try to have some sort of test drive first (pinjam kawan punya dulu or whoever is kind enough to let you test) before deciding to buy coz you wouldnt want to spend like crazy than not satisfied and later on spend some more

say for some reason.. u surfaced jst in the nick of time.. out of air.. jst enuf to fully inflate ur BCD.. while waiting for others to surface u want to swim around.. use the snorkel lo.. can do snorkeling while waiting :) dont worry, ur instructor will teach u the usage of the snorkel.

i personally use it for shore snorkels when im 'supposed' to be resting and preparing for next dive.. or on no-dive days (preparing to return via flight).

as for rental of tank, BCD etc.. depends on the dive centre.. some more some less.. some bundled in. for example, bubbles dive centre at perhentian, charges you RM10 per dive for using their equipment.. (tank, bcd, regulators, masks, snorkel (if u want), fins, wetsuit, weight belt)

btw, i wear glasses too.. depends on ur power.. if ur like me, around 200, no need special mask (with prescribed lens). because everything underwater appears larger..
