List of Suitable Dive Site For A Beginner
« on: June 12, 2011, 11:45:59 AM »

 :hello: Hi to all,

I had just so called graduated as an Open Water Diver. My dive experiences were only those dives that I had made while attending the course plus 1 additional leisure shore dive. As a newbie in scuba, the level of confidence and skills need to be gained and developed.

I am seeking help and opinion from all sifus here to list me suitable dive sites for a beginner where the current is not strong, the depth is not too deep (below 18 meter), good visibility and of course-lah the dive site should offers great view of beautiful corals / marine animals.

During my course in Redang Island, I dove at 3 sites (1. Tanjung Tokong 2. Southern Tip 3. Tanjung Tengah). In Tanjung Tokong, I had encountered strong current while in Southern Tips the visibility was too low. Tanjung Tengah suits me well as a beginner where it suits all the criteria for a beginner.

I would really appreciate if all sifus could list them up here for me as it may also useful for other beginner like me for us to plan on our next destination to dive.  :)

Thank you very much. :notworthy:

As a certified diver you should continue to advance your scuba education and not have an attitude to chose 'easy' dive site.

it is a very dangerous mindset simply for the reason that the sea is a hostile and dynamic environment . Sadly ,some dive leaders chose to play down the danger . (for fear of losing business).

Diving is fun nevertheless of a serious technical and physical requirement.

If you want fun and safe ,you can play ping-pong ..

Thank you oldturtle for the advise and well said. I am sure that you're answering based on your experience and knowledge even.

Why I am asking for a so called safe dive site is all back to the advise which is I wanted to advance my scuba education and skills before going into more challenging water. Yeap, everybody knows that the sea is unpredictable but at least each dive site should have its own reputation. We newbie do not want to go to Bali and looking for the Mola² as for our next immediate dive . But at least we need to prepare for it slowly step by step. We are all talking about safe diving and we beginner should have that in mind even. We should know our limit and that is the idea why I am asking for a suitable dive site for a beginner as while in Redang, I've met a few experience diver and they told me that some dive site will not be suitable for a beginner even.

I know that I can seat in front of the computer browsing and reviewing reviews of all dive site to look a for suitable dive site but ain't this forum supposed to be the platform to share knowledge, experience and a place to discuss?

I totally agree with you Master oldturtle that Dive Leader should not play down with the danger. But by ending it in the ping-pong way is harsh for such a just a simple question asked.  :icon_salut:

Pulau Kerengge,P.Redang
Entry 5m and then goes to 20+m
Current mild. Lots of coral.Very nice.

Pulau Ekor Tebu, p.Redang
At the same level as Pulau Kerengge

D'lagoon Perhentian
Less than 14-15m deep if i am not mistaken
http://www.diveperhentian.com/sites/lagoon.html

Terumbu Tiga , Perhentian
http://www.diveperhentian.com/sites/tiger.html
though sometime depends on wheather. There are certain time, current is a bit strong.
Ask your DM. They will know

Sugar Wreck, Perhentian
Although the wreck only less than 20m at depth, but the current can sometime be pretty strong
and normal for all ship wreck, viz are mostly poor.
But the fishes! whoaa..the fishes are great

Gua Rajawali, tenggol
http://longadventure.com/scuba/dive_map_tenggol.html
Most divers will say tenggol is for advance buuut there are certain spots which can cater for beginners.
Lots of macro and soft corals.
Tenggol are best with macro and soft corals.

Turtle point, tenggol.
when it is about to 1 hour before sunset, best to snorkel and dive around this area.
Depth at 5m. By boat is like only a few seconds from shore.
You can swim i think 300-400m from shore.
Turtle point is like a sanctuary so many marine can be found before sunset and dawn.

Tanjung Gemuk, Tenggol,
Same like Teluk rajawali

Dont go for Tokong2 in tenggol. If your DM take you there, better make sure there are less than 8 divers on board.
The current surface are strong. Most DM will brief, once enter meet at 5m.
It will be pretty chaos want to wait for all divers to enter the water.

Salang House Reef, Tioman
Not so deep , easy only you have to watchout for boats
http://www.azmidive.com/index.php/about-us
Most Tioman house reef are located under their jetties.

Teluk Tederau, Tioman
15-17m
http://www.tiomanreefdivers.com/dive.html

Pirate reef, Tioman.

Marine park, Tioman.

There are dives sites which are 18-20m but the currents can sometime be strong.
Again ask your DM about the condition.

Aur/dayang
I cant remember any dive sites here that are no currents at all.
The place on the weekends are pack with divers from Singapore and local.
Imagine one big ferry up to 200 passengers/divers.

Oneday...you'll be begging for more adventure dive sites...i just know it.  :D

Since you are newbie , DM will always suggest some areas that is adventure to you but they wont say it.
Dont take it as a negative way. Take it as a motivation to go for advance level.
What your instructor had teach you are just basic scuba diving.
The rest are knowledge comes from experience.
Before enter the water Just ask DM
What are things you will aspect to see.
Current condition.

P. Payar Langkawi.
Also good for beginners though i am not sure whether you will be satisfy with
the viz.
Ever been to Port Dickson Seremban? Try snorkelling there.
When you dive there, everything is green. You can loose the sight of your
buddy just by 2m-3m apart.
Trying to take pictures without the strobes will be difficult.
Ask the dive operator when is the best time to dive payar.
I think during new moon is the best but i'm not so sure.
Diving near the platform should be ok

Near the coral garden a bit tricky
http://www.mytourpal.com/divingGuide/countries/malaysia/langkawi.htm

and no need to master me...i am just a diver and still learning.

Thank you Run for the info and the link given. I had been to Port Dickson but yes as what you had mentioned, the water visibility in Port Dickson is not good. I will contact the operator (for Payar) to check on the best month/time to dive.  :) Thank you very much.

As a newbie in scuba, the level of confidence and skills need to be gained and developed

through... dives more

Quote
list me suitable dive sites for a beginner where the current is not strong, the depth is not too deep (below 18 meter), good visibility and of course-lah the dive site should offers great view of beautiful corals / marine animals.

Aquaria KLCC, great vis, no current, beautiful fishes, beautiful corals .. also your requirement won't help you gain skills and confidence.

Quote
In Tanjung Tokong, I had encountered strong current while in Southern Tips the visibility was too low.

glad that you had experienced it, then u'll learn.
if you learned, you'll know you have to stay calm n close to buddy when vis is low and how to counter strong current, either you realized that fin kicking need to be improved or you realized you need a better fin

Quote
Tanjung Tengah suits me well as a beginner where it suits all the criteria for a beginner.

u'll always remain at open water practice level, not open water diver level.

a good dive site never be a good dive site forever, weather change, sea change.. etc

a good dive site like you said never improve you. You need to conquer your fear(if u have) and experience different diving conditions by dives more then confidence and experience gained without you knowing it.

I went to sugar wreck @ Perhentian at my first dive trip after OW course.
Crazy current on the surface, low vis about 3m, and separated with buddy(due to low vis) for while because i was the last one to descent. I knew i had to keep kicking, remain calm though i'm not,  just follow bubbles coming from bottom and finally I re-unite with my buddies. the first thing i did with my buddy is showing him the "stick with me" hand signal. and slowly i calm down and we had exciting good dive although the crazy current and low vis, a different experience you do not know when you'll experience again. few month after the trip, we decided to go back perhentian this year, the first in my mind was to conquer sugar wreck again, i went, i did, though didn't have crazy current, better vis, good dive, can see more things n clear but I still miss last year experience that made me learnt a lot. same site but different diving condition and experience.

my deep dive of AOW at mabul, Panglima reef, didn't expect to have strong current, we descent to 30m while being drift by current, again i'm slow because i had equalization problem.. in my heart i said shit my instructor n my buddy has reached bottom 30m and i'm still drifting fast while adjusting my equalization, but then i did not panic, i still took my time. end up my instructor and buddy have to chase me due to not much "no deco time" left. we missed the nice spot for kneel down to do practice .. end up we did it at the wall by holding the rock and we done. I did not panic at all, because I'm a open water diver, i know all the procedure, and the main factor i did not panic because i know what is current like that past diving experience I learned.

this year perhentian, shark point, a beginner dive site(also snorkel site) like what you wanted. normal dive, my gauge hose burst, i didnt realize, my buddy alerted me.. ok, i bang my tank with pointer, dive master came n instruct me to signal him when I low on air, i said ok , relax.. continue diving.. what i did.. i pulled the spg gauge n put on top of my left hand(not holding), just let it lay on top, monitor air consumption from time to time, still enjoying looking for things to see, 50 bar reached, slowly fin toward dive master n alert him... he signaled me am i ok to ascent alone, i signal ok(we have already agree on land if we low on air very early, we will ascent first, becuz my group of buddy have the same amount of air consumption compare the other group which better than us). he passed me sausage buoy, and my buddy and dive master continue diving and i slowly ascent while still look around for beautiful coral. on the surface, kept calm, relax, lay back and wait for boat to pick me up... another lesson learned and experience applied~! also indirectly my buddy also learned that pointer /tang banger is so important thru my incident. you see.. so many can learn and confidence & experience gained.

this year, perhentian, batu layar, excellent vis 15-20m.. beautiful hard corals.. last year i dive same site but not much impression(perhaps due to low vis, cloudy day no sunlight.. not really remember).. so you see.. bad site in your definition can turn to be a good site in your definitions. weather change does affect dive site.

this year, perhentian, Terumbu Tiga, go through holes.. but more holes compared to last year. again i was the last one.. went in dark holes but came out wrong exit.. separated with everyone... what i did.. ascent a lil so i'm on top of rocks and look for bubbles, n already prepare for worst case to do buddy separation procedure. then i saw bubbles, my dive master came to find me and we reunited.

also i did learned and improve many things of my diving skills (too long to tell) as I dive more and more.

all of the above are taught during OW course(unless you didn't pay attention to what you learn, if so you are risking your life) and gained from experiences that makes me still in love of scuba diving though things happen.

dive sites i recommned for beginner:
terumbu tiga / t3 @ perhentian .. a good buoyancy control, you'll learn
sugar wreck @ perhentian .. diving in low vis bottom
pinnacle / tokong laut @ perhentian .. an experience of direct free descent / buoy line descent until 18m only start swimming.

No offend mean of above, but you are in need to change your attitude and mindset towards scuba diving. Enjoy scuba diving with the right attitude.

this year, perhentian, Terumbu Tiga, go through holes.. but more holes compared to last year. again i was the last one.. went in dark holes but came out wrong exit.. separated with everyone... what i did.. ascent a lil so i'm on top of rocks and look for bubbles, n already prepare for worst case to do buddy separation procedure. then i saw bubbles, my dive master came to find me and we reunited.

also i did learned and improve many things of my diving skills (too long to tell) as I dive more and more.

all of the above are taught during OW course(unless you didn't pay attention to what you learn, if so you are risking your life) and gained from experiences that makes me still in love of scuba diving though things happen.

dive sites i recommned for beginner:
terumbu tiga / t3 @ perhentian .. a good buoyancy control, you'll learn
sugar wreck @ perhentian .. diving in low vis bottom
pinnacle / tokong laut @ perhentian .. an experience of direct free descent / buoy line descent until 18m only start swimming.

No offend mean of above, but you are in need to change your attitude and mindset towards scuba diving. Enjoy scuba diving with the right attitude.

Thank you for the advises and sharing your experiences with us. All advises are well explained and I appreciate it a lot. And thank you for listing out 3 recommended dive site for a beginner. I will put it on my note even. Your comments will be taken positively as it will be a booster and challenge for me to improve in near future. Muchas Gracias Master HongHeng.  :icon_thumleft:

If you have the pleasure of diving on current free days (not necessarily on weekends or public holidays)  they are available ....look at the tide charts and you  can dive for hours without fear of water currents.  I am based in Kuala Besut where there are plenty of artificial reefs, ship wrecks and of course Perhentian Island itself.  Call me 019-3511160 if you are interested.

Thank you for the advise and help offered. I am actually scheduled to visit Besut on 26, 27 & 29 September 2011. Maybe I can meet you on the 30th for 1 or 2 leisure dive? Or is it already monsoon season? :) Thank you very much Master Solo.

If in tioman try the following dive sites. DM's will bring u here if ure a beginner.
- Renggis
- Tomok
- Marine park
- All house reef such as Paya, Salang, Tekek

This may sound very basic but always, always practise in the pool even if youre certified or at a professional level. Remember pool is your training ground whereas the ocean is your playground. From there u will improve your breathing technique and thus your buoyancy in a more controlled environment. Cheers Safe Diving ;)

Actually, lord_dethan, you asked a pretty valid question - its a pretty wise thing to do, ie diving the relatively 'easy" sites to gain more confidence and improve your skill.

In fact, a lot of dive centers will do check out dives (at relatively calm sites) upon arrival. This isn't to "check our buoyancy and trim alone, its also where the DMs gauge your level of comfort underwater.

Like what Holemaster said, ideal situation would be to practice practice and practice - be it in a dedicated pool or having more of these so-called "easy" dives. Get to know your equipment and its functions. Polish the buoyancy skills. Get comfortable breathing thru the regulator.  etc etc.

Its like riding a bicycle lah - we always start with the training wheels. Once confident and the skills improve, thats when you whack the wheelies, ramp jumps, bunny hops and whatnots. :)
