BTW, most airlines have a free allowance for golf bags. I know some divers who put all their gear in golf bags to get this allowance. Only a few airlines have extended this to dive gear, and those airlines usually serve dive destinations. (Just like some airlines in the US and Europe let you take skis at no extra charge.)

Interesting option, Q  :)
but how is this done?

My experience so far in having to pay excess baggage fees for my dive gear is when i depart from Msia.

Coming back however, was a different story.

What normally happens upon checking in (on my return filight), the girl at the check-in counter would simply ask me (most of the time in a Thai accent) "Scuba?".

And i would flash back my sweetest of smiles and reply : "yeah". Afterwhich, she would then wrap my gear bag in those red, 'fragile' tape and check me in. Of course, after returning my sacharinely sweet smile.
 :)

I remember once upon a time when AA gave access baggage allowance for scuba divers - being a new airline, they were probly pressured to participate in Visit Malaysia Year thingy, coz it was never offered again.

Those were the days...

Well, just buy one of those duffle bags or hard cases that golfers put their bag of clubs in. Instead of a bag of clubs, scuba gear, lah!

Sa-Ku-bah? Yeah, I know that cute Thai way of saying it. Smiles work wonders, and also the fact that this is a scuba-nation. AirAsia may not be helping divers, but Tiger does offer a flat-rate overweight charge for scuba gear instead of the per-kilo charge AirAsia imposes. M'sia should be ashamed that a S'pore company is doing this, considering that S'pore doen't have a single decent dive site.

You win.  :P

But let me guess: 2 mm shorties; no extra mask; no save-a-dive kit; no heavy stuff like torches, batteries, chargers, etc.; full-foot plastic fins (no booties); no safety sausages or other doodads like an anchor rod, rattle, reef hook, cutting device, .....   :o

It's the "extras" that add weight. When I go on a dive trip, I don't depend on anybody else to supply my stuff for me. I'm s'posed to be a role model, after all.   ;)

I agree a smile does take u a long way in thailand. (since i can t do anything else!)  :)

As for AA imposing this excess baggage charges rubbish, i was told that the monies 'earned' from these excess charges are shared amongst the ground staff.

How true this is, i do not know.

However, it does explain their extra 'rigidness' when it comes to negotiatiing reductions (my *blink**blink**blink**blink**blink**blink**blink* tactic doesnt work anymore) in the charges, not to mention the strict "no group check in" etc - which was never an issue before.

So i shall now rummage though my dad's (un)used golf/duffle bags and experiment.

I had a big Akona Duffle Bag, big enough to put in all my dive gear.
- BCD
- Fins
- Booties
- Mask
- Elephant Condom
- 3mm Wetsuit
- Gloves
Because my BCD is really big in size so i try to put all the gear on the BCD and than buckle it up. Squeeze all the clothing and toileteries to two side. And check in.

Camera, casing, document, entertainment device, all hand carry. Everytime check in to AA, i always ask for Fragile wrap.

P.S On my last trip coming back from Kelantan, i found out there is a way you can cheat on your luggage's weight at the check-in counter. I don't thing i should share with you guys or not, i worry later get caught will kena sue or not? If you like to take the risk, let me know i teach you how.
